It may be a problem with the laser or the lens. If the DVDs work on another player, try first to have the lens cleaned. You may use a lens cleaner with cleaning solution for this one. If that does not work, you have to inspect the disc drive closely and check for physical damages on the circuit like burnt parts or leaking capacitors. Inspect the lens as well.

Here is the manual. Page 99 shows you how to rest the recorder to factory defaults. https://www.sony.co.uk/electronics/support/res/manuals/3113/31137591M.pdf
Does the machine record on to + or - DVDR?
If it does both try each type. Also try high quality discs, some of the cheaper types won't work. Try it on different speeds too.
I have the XBR616 zenith combo. If your dead set on initializing your dvds, I can try to do one in my dvd player to see if it works, then send it back to you. I can't guarantee anything, my player is a bit fussy, but I don't mind helping you.
Take, if good batteris from the remote controller and recycel the unit, and by a better one. I have the same problem, recordings will stay on the dvd only a short thime readable and later the disk is empty.
Sorry my english.
Its not easy to copy a DVD, unless you have the proper software. Even then there is a lot of trial and error that you have to go thru. My suggestion is to findout whats the recording software that are used by both of the recorders and try to get around them by means of a computer.
Or alternatevly do the recording via a computer.
DVD-Rs do work with the RDR-VX500 ...... I had not recorded on mine for a few months after I ran out of the last batch ....... then I tried recording on the newer Sony DVD-Rs I had ...... would not record on DVD-R ..... turns out the instructions say the recorder will not work with any DVDs faster than 8x .... It looks like it's recording but it doesn't ..... then I noticed the newer DVDs were 16x ...... found an old 8x and tried it and it works fine ..... turns out the unit won't record slower on a 16x, it just won't record at all ...... get 8x and you'll be ok
I had the same problem with my recorder except that it wouldnt play any discs at all.. I finally unplugged the recorder and left it unplugged for 16 hours. Now it is fine. I am not getting any error messages.
