Windows XP infinite loop / boot sector probelms

So, I'm in the middle of playing guitar hero 3 on my computer, then I get a blue screen. I reboot, and I get a bluescreen, rinse repeat. Long behold, I probably have a boot sector virus. So, I grab my xp disc that I normally use, and go through and begin the setup / repair process. The repair process beings, and I get a cyclic Redundancy Check error, then my computer reboots.
I try several more times to get the disk to work with the same result, so I pull it out of the disc drive, and there's 3 large chunks of the film on the top of the disc missing. So, I make myself another boot disc, and try it. Then the install cannot find ASMS. I try several times to point the install to the ASMS portion of the boot disc, but it won't read the disc.
I try looking about on the internet for awhile to figure out what I can do, but most of the posts I read don't help. Furthermore, XP has decided to go into a 'setup is restarting' loop, as in all XP wants to do now, is try to repair and reinstall windows, it won't boot to the HDD no matter what I do. I have, however figured out how to get DOS, Regedit, and the Windows Hardware, -
being able to browse my hard drive through regedit, loading hives.
Here's the kicker, I could have simply used my xp install disc to fix my boot sectors by pressing f6 to load 3rd party drivers from the disc.
Now I'm stuck, indefinately in this loop, and I cannot figure out how the **** to get out of it. I am simply, frustrated.

- I've tried those solutions via searching the web. None of them worked. I've disconnected everything except keyboard / mouse. No USB is connected to the computer, stripped down bare-bones. I would rather not format as I would lose important Data. All I want to do is stop the loop from happening and repair the boot sector.

- I can hold shift and press F10 to open the cmd prompt in the windows xp setup, however after running the CHKDSK /R and pressing Y, It says 'This volume will be checked the next time the system restarts'. I try restarting and it goes back to 'setup is restarting'. The problem that first needs to be rectified is the infinite loop with the 'setup is restarting', and after that the boot sector. I cannot do anything with my OS untill this is fixed. :(

- When I cancel the setup / repair the error is as follows

'SXS.DLL: Syntax error in manifest or policy file "E:\I386\asms\1000\MSFT\Windows\gdiplus\gdiplus.man" on line 4

Error: Installation failed: E:\I386\asms. Error Message : Data error (cyclic redundancy check).

- at this point I don't care about my data. The MAIN problem is that I CANNOT get to the menu where I would FORMAT my hard drive. The problem is that I am STUCK at the setup / repair screen and it loops.

- the only difference is, mine sits and waits for a disc to install, which all the discs I have tried won't read i've gone into device manager and made sure the disk drive is ok as well

  1. Check in the BIOS to make sure that the HD is present in the system before proceeding..
  2. If not then power off the laptop / PC and then carefully remove and replace the HD from and to its connector.
  3. Then secure it then reboot the laptop.
  4. Check the BIOS settings again to see if the HD is recognised.
  5. If you still can’t see the HD then obtain a USB to IDE / SATA adaptor cable from eBay or your local PC store and remove the HD from the laptop and lay it down on a flat horizontal surface and use the adapter to connect to the laptop’s HD and connect the USB to another PC. This will show if there are any issues with the HD itself and will allow you to format it if necessary. It will aslso allow you to copy any apps and data off the drive before reformatting it.
  6. Then replace it back in the laptop /PC and all should be well.
  7. If not then you can suspect that you have an HD controller issue which is a very costly repair in a laptop.

  1. If the laptop / PC will boot or you have a bootable CD / DVD then change the boot sequence in BIOS to be CD/DVD then Hard Disk.
  2. Reboot the laptop / PC.
  3. Once booted look at the Device Manager to see if there are any errors showing in the Storage Devices and the Hard Disk in particular.
  4. Then go to option 5 or use the bootable CD / DVD to reformat and rebuild the hard drive.
  5. If all the above fails then install a new Hard Drive, format it as required and reinstall the Operating System and applications.
The above is much quicker than trying to get Fixboot and associated fixes to work. Its also better to totally reformat the HD anyway to get rid of allthe bad sectotrs. Also remember to reformat the drive with NTFS rather than FAT 32 as it allows the dik to operate more efficiently and handle errors better.
