Having the same problem. Sometimes the batteries go dead overnight, sometimes in a week (of no use). Happens with both rechargeable and standard batteries. Very frustrating to not know if your camera will work or not.

Mine will not power up sometimes after charging even my new batteries. When I tap or hit the battery compartment with my hand and then try it turns on sometimes. I tried cleaning my battery post, still no luck. Help please. Tammie

Camera was powered on, went to power off and all power went off (lens stayed open). Batteries are ok, contacts are clean. Removed card and re-inserted. Power will not come back on. Canon Power Shot S3 IS.

Unfortunately, my camera got a little bit wet in a rain storm, and at first would light up when I tried to switch it on, and try to power up all the way, but now, will not do anything at all. Have tried brand new batteries and all solutions here. Warranty just expired in January. *sigh*.

Mine won't power up either. The mode lever will not stay put on either the shooting or playback position. Is this the same as having trouble "powering up"? Or, could this be a problem with the lever itself? I have cleaned the contacts and made sure the batteries are charged up. Don't know whaat else to do.

had the very same problem. Returned it to CANON through the store I purchased it from. CANON said it was a problem with the shutter circuit and the cost to repair was going to be around $200.00!! I was and am not impressed. CANON would not deal with me direct unless I ship the camera direct to them. The retailer told me that I shouldn't pay to fix it and get a new camera. The camera cost me $600.00 and almost to the day the warranty expired, the batteries started draining! I will get a new camera and it won't be a CANON AND I will also return the camera direct to CANON telling them to fix it at no charge or replace. That way, at least, I'll have something I can sell.

Try another set of well batteries. I had the same problem with well known, brand new batteries and changed over to disposable AA Lithium batteries and never had the problem again. I have also found that the Lithium batteries last much longer than my rechargebles or the "six-times-longer" brand.

One of four rechargable AA batteries have burst...

The ideal way to get it out would be to make a small hole on the battery and drain out the powder inside. A small screw driver should help you do this. You can then compress the AA container by pushing the edges towards the center and take it out.

Camera shuts off when zoomed

If the camera has recently been dropped you may have lens damage that is preventing it from powering up. If it hasn't been dropped your problem may be due to weak/worn out batteries or corrosion on the battery contacts inside the camera which can prevent the full power of the batteries from flowing into the camera. Try this free fix before you do anything else: remove the batteries and wipe the camera contacts firmly with a dry cloth (heavy corrosion may require cleaning with a wire brush, steel wool, or sandpaper). Remove any residue that may have fallen into the battery compartment during cleaning, then wipe both ends of the batteries and place them back in the camera and give them a full charge (assuming that you are using rechargeable batteries). This cleaning clears the problem about 90% of the time. If it doesn't work for you, it may be time to replace the batteries, or the camera may have a problem that requires professional repair.

S3 is issue

E18 is a lens error that needs to be serviced by Canon technicians. You may qualify to replace your S3 for a flat rate or to repair, but it is nothing that you can fix at home.

As for the batteries, what brand? If they are rechargable, make sure they haven't been drained-try them in another device perhaps. I drained mine by leaving them on the charger too long and I had the same issue. Try another set of batteries and clean the battery contacts inside the camera with a pencil eraser to get rid of any residue or oxidation that may have taken place.

If none of this helps, call Canon for service or other option to upgrade for a deep discounted rate. Sometimes it's cheaper than to fix it if you are out of your one year manufacturer's warranty.

Hope this helps!

Canon MV550i Mini DV Digital- red flashing symbol

from canon's support page:

This symbol indicates an empty or missing backup battery. The backup battery allows the camcorder to retain date, time and other settings when the main power source is removed.
The flashing symbol is not recorded by the camcorder so you can continue filming without problems.

To stop the flashing symbol remove the old backup battery and replace it with a new one, or recharge the built-in lithium battery if the camcorder has a built-in rechargeable battery.
Note: when the backup battery runs out during filming please do not remove the power supply (battery pack) before the camcorder is powered from a household power source and power adapter, or the user settings and date/time will be reset.

For more detailed information please consult the instruction manual.
