Maytag Skybox "Is this normal?"

Like many of you out there I was having the same problem with 1 of the 4 bottle/can racks not wanting to dispense any pop. At first when you hit the button of the failing rack I heard a gear turn and some clicking. As time progressed all I heard was a popping sound and then nothing. Last evening I took a flashlight and looked in the unit and to my surprise I saw that a HUGE amount of ice had built up on the back side of the dispensing rack. I took the dispensing rack out and found that the ice block had completely consumed all of the wiring and motors on the back. The ice had actually pulled 2 wires out of the main board as it expanded. Is this massive build up of ice normal and if not what can I do to prevent it? I will be putting the unit back together this evening and I will let you know if it works correctly. Thanks for any insight on the ice build up problem.

Re: Maytag Skybox "Is this normal?"

See tip on main Skybox page. It could be a bad card, sensor or the flap may not be returning to the sensor.

Re: Maytag Skybox "Is this normal?"

I have intermittent problems with one dispenser and disassembled the system1.gif and swapped drive motors for the dispensers. The problem followed the motor. shows that they sell the individual rack assemblies but I have not yet ordered one. I am trying electrical supply stores to see if I can just buy the motor but I doubt they will be able to track it as it has no markings.

Dispensing Problems

I have just replaced a rack in a Skybox and did some disassembly to see what I could find. On the backside of each rack is a hub in which the drive motor mounts. Inside that hub is a card with two sensors on it which the white ribbon with the 4 wires connects to. One sensor is for the "Home" position which the dispensor goes to if it is empty. The other sensor reads a small piece of metal embedded in the flap which tucks up under the dispensing drum. It is not the flap which is just about horizontal as you you look into the machine. This piece of metal is sensed and tells the machine whether the flap has returned signalling if the machine is jammed. Ensure that this flap moves freely and move it around to see if the jam disappears. This is likley why many jams disappear if you open the door and close it firmly.

Skybox beverage dispenser. will dispense one can

I had the same problem. Found the cover where the beverages dispense to be rusted and not resetting. After the can dispenses, just push the cover back into position and this should help.

The Maytag SkyBox is not a commercial vending machine. It is designed for INDOOR use only. The possibility of electric shock is likely from a unit that has gotten wet. In addition, the electronics are not designed to withstand the outdoor elements.

Maytag Skybox

Looks like I found the answer to the problem of Skybox not dispensing. I replaced the sensor in the dispensing door and my Skybox now works great!
Part is available from just look up your Skybox model number, mine was Skybox model MBV1976AAB. The diagram on the website should show you the exploded view of the door section of your Skybox. You are looking for part number 901892 or on the exploded view it will be number 21. The Maytag part number is 11001182, board flipper sensor. My Skybox had been down for two years and now works again!

Low product light stays on

You can go to and purchase a new switch for the low product. It mounts on the back of the dispensing rack, item number is 18 on the assembly diagram. It is also possible that the existing switch has become unplugged from the board by ice buildup.

Rack Not Dispensing, Looking For a Replacement Motor

Let me tall you what we have just learned...
1. When Whirlpool bought Maytag, they dumped the Skybox and all parts associated with it. The parts are no longer being manufactured from what they tell us.
2. We have had our unit less than 3 years and replaced the two center motors and have the bottom one going out now.
3. We are having cooling and icing up issues.
4. When you speak with Whirlpool they are unwilling to help.
5. We have gone to electrical supply and repair folks and since the motors are not marked, they say it could be one of about 1000!.
6. We are ordering parts from parts select so we have some.

I think we should find a way to rally together and get some cooperation form Whirlpool. $600+ is a bit much to spend for a couple of years use.
