Hi there, either the brush is rubbing against the shoe plate or the belt is slipping. Have had the same problem myself, both problems are easily sorted by replacing the belt or plate whichever is the offending character. There are many dyson replacement parts available online and not very expensive either. hope this is of some help, I can explain how to remove both if you need me to.

I have a dyson dc07 with a malfuncitoning clutch diagnosed here on fixya. I've replaced the clutch and the grinding noise when the clutch is engaged for carpet and non rotating brush problem presists. This is after replacement of the clutch with a new part. Install of the new part went well and there are no otehr apparent problems with the unit. Ideas? The unit is only a couple years old and not used that much on carpet. For an expensive vacuum I'm not that impressed with it at this point.
