Hotpoint BWM - very noisy but not walking accross...

posted by URZS on Jan 02, 2008

Normally this macine operates ultra quietly however recently it has got more and more noisy. I have removed the access panels and although there is some movement, the outer casing is stable. When I lift the internal drum there is some movement so i suspect that the bearings may have gone. If so, do i have to replace both front and back bearings? If so is the thread holding the drum on a right-hand thread? I do have some experience in washing machine repairs but i would welcome any advice.

There is a little play from side to side but not as much as top to bottom. The drum moves freely. The macine is less than 2 years old. How do i remove the rear fly wheel? I can see the bearing and it does seem strange that hotpoint does supply a front and rear bearing kit for this machine so maybe its a model that can replace the bearings. BWM 129

Remove the back of the machine to expose the inner drum pulley. Need to know if this pulley is rotating and if there is any side to side play.

The noise you are discribing does sound like a rear bearing that is mounted in the external tub housing. Depending on the age of the machine, this bearing is NOT replacable. The outer tub must be replaced because the bearing is molded into the drum.

On most of the front loaders the pulley is held in place by one retaining bolt in the center of the pulley. Remove this bolt and gently pry/wiggle the pulley off the spin shaft. This will allow the inner tub to be push through the machine. Some dissasembly at the front is needed to allow the inner tub to com out.

Sorry so long to get back to you.

This might sound silly. Try turning the bolt in the opposite direction. Might be reverse thread. Also, spraying a little dw-40 or other penetrating oil might loosen it up.
