This is the standard checkup procedure.
Make sure that your fuel mix is correct and clean. Also make sure there are no air bubbles trapped in the fuel line. Agitate the fuel tank to make sure there is no blockage caused by dirt and debris, and if you have a fuel filter fitted, then make sure it is clean and does not need replacing.
Next check the air filter to make sure it is clean.
Check to see if you have a winter and summer setting and choose the correct setting.
Check that the choke operates correctly and if it is auto then the plate moves freely open and close.
Next check that the spark plug is whitish grey and matt in colour and not back, oily or pure white. If so then change the plug and set the correct spark gap for the particular type of plug you are using. If the plug is black and sooty or pure white matt then the fuel mix is incorrect and you will need to adjust this. Black indicates too much oil in the 2 stroke and burning low and the white indicates over temperature and probably not enough oil in the fuel mix or using to high an octane rating. If it is oily then there is far too much oil in the fuel mix and if you are using a 4 stroke or a 2 stroke with additional lubrication then there is oil leaking into the combustion area most likely caused by a worn or cracked piston ring. After that check that the carb is operating correctly and opens fully when starting and closes as the engine warms upon idle. Also make sure that it idles evenly. Also if it stops when you throttle it then look at the spark cap to make sure it is not loose or damaged and produces enough voltage to fire up the plug correctly otherwise you may have a generator issue or a carb problem or air filter problem or something restring air flow. Also check the engine casing over for any cracks or damage.
If the gas is old, for example, last season, change the fuel ..drain the tank, carb and fuel line.
Also clean the air filter... this can have similar effects on start/run.
Pull the spark plug and clean it also, you can use spray carb cleaner on the tip, and then clean with fine sandpaper.
then replace the fuel with fresh fuel/oil mix.
A good spray can of carb clean will work to clean any build up in the carb jets, fuel line etc...

OK. New fuel, fuel filter, spark plug, and a clean air filter. Still doesn't run. I have thoroughly disassembled and cleaned the carb. I have experience doing this as I am an auto tech by trade and have rebuilt several quadra-jet carbs. Tried finding a carb kit but my local retailer doesn't have it. I will try other retailers tomorrow but want to know, other than a total rebuild, do you have any other suggestions?
