HL-DT-ST DVD-RW GWA-4082N is not working properly. I had no problems with this hardware before but suddenly it cannot read either CDs or DVDs. I checked the Device Mananger and the driver's status is 'working properly'. What should I do?

- I don't see any UpperFilters line...can that cause the malfunction??
1. Start > Run. 2. regedit 3. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class in the Registry Editor dialog box and select the {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} key, which appears as a folder. 4. Select File > Export 5. save the file to the Desktop in case you need to restore it 6. In the right panel of the Registry Editor, select the LowerFilters line, and then choose Edit > Delete. Click Yes in the Confirm Key Delete dialog box. 7. Do the same for the UpperFilters line 8. Close the Registry Editor. 9. Restart Windows.

- go to
Start>Run
type "regedit"
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\CDRom click on start
change the value from 4 to 3
restart the computer
You could try a cleaning disk in the drive, the laser may be dirty. Check that the cables are firmly connected (this means opening the case). If all these are OK then I am afraid you may need a new drive as it is not really an option to repair these drives.
