I get a black box in the middle of my picture when I change channels and sometimes just out of the blue

This is probably the text box function of the closed caption decoder. Find the closed caption button on your remote and turn off the closed captioning. The button may say "ccd" or "cc". You might have to turn it off in the menu.
I hope this helps.

''big black box that appears in the middle of the screen on certain channels''

It's your "closed captioning." Just turn that feature off, and you'll be good to go!

If a box show on a screen. What is it and what

Usually the box is because you have closed-captioning set for TEXT mode. Check your captioning settings, make sure captions are turned off, and the problem should clear up. Most TV remotes have a single button for captions, so it's easy to press it and get into this mode without knowing it. Then you see the box on some channels and programs, but not on others.

Please take a moment to give this solution a fixya rating if it clears up the trouble, and thanks for asking here!

CC is a function of your cable box in this case. TV's have the feature as well, but Bose is right about not all HDMI devices supporting CC through HDMI, especially converting from component to HDMI before hitting your TV. The solution: call your cable provider for this. Start at the source. The cables you use or the TV won't 'take away' closed caption if it's already there.

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

On the original remote of this TV, this would be 'Closed Caption' feature and could be disabled in the MENU/Settings.

Good luck and thank you for using FixYa.

Black Box On Screen

Salutations Cranberries,

The annoying black box is usually a feature of the closed captioning called "Text" You should be able to go in to onscreen menu and select caption options. Unless you need to have the closed captioning on for medical reasons, it maybe best just to turn off all captioning options.

Hope this helps.

Toshiba TV MV13P2

All I can say is that the black box appears when the closed captions are on and set to TEXT. This is normal. Turning off the closed captions should make the black box go away. If the closed captions are somehow turning themselves back on, there may be an issue with the microprocessor in your TV.
