maryh_3, If it was working ok before it should be ok today. Dell didn't make a AS500 computer monitor. LOOK on back of the monitor for correct mod# . AS500 is some sort of audio option!!! Test the monitor. When you say "screen cut off before login" did you mean that you tried to login LATE and that if you had arrived sooner you could have logged in? Try to do this test. Reconnect your Dell to a KNOWN GOOD, fully booted pc that has the win-desktop as the displayed window. Make note of EXACTLY what takes place on LCD panel when you push the "on/off" front panel switch of the monitor to turn it on. How long were you able to see the desktop on the LCD panel? 1 sec or 2 sec, 3sec or 48.5 seconds? Did the screen turn DARK? Or did the screen go BLACK but not BLANK? or did it turn BLACK and BLANK??? Hold a very bright flashlight at different angles, 1" from the screen and even though the LCD panel looks BLACK you may still be able to see the desktop if the monitor's power supply (switch-mode-power-supply) is in partial SHUTDOWN mode. If you don't see a very faint image of the desktop then the SMPS will be in full SHUTDOWN mode. Mary, get back to fixya with your results from doing the flashlight "trick" that every owner of an LCD monitor with CCFlamps should know how to do when the "BLACK SCREEN OF DEATH" darkens their LCD panel. If your screen was bright 2 or 3 days before, then you should think about getting it repaired or contact Dell and ask about a cash+old for a factory refurbished unit. Here is what might happen if you "trade-in" your unit for for a new wide screen unit. Let's just guess that the sales guy gives you $5 or $10 for your monitor. The Tech in the back gives him $5 for it and proceeds to repair it, and if lucky puts $2 to $5 in parts into your old unit. The Tech now has a nice monitor he can sell off to one of his friends for $40-$60. Well anyway, get back to fixya and let us know what your plan of action will be. I hope that this response was of some help to you.
