Hello,
Have you tried the following: Updating the bios? Updating the
firmware for any PCMCIA cards/CD roms etc? If you have multiple sticks of
ram/ pull 1 then swap? Run full scandisk on HD from prompt to see if it is
developing bad sectors and thus maybe crashing?
Let me know if you have any issue. Thanks for using Fixya.com

I've had my HP Pavilion DV2940SE laptop for a little over a year now. Thus far, I haven't run into any major problems. This evening when returning home, my computer was on stand-by. When I touched the touchpad to wake the laptop, the desktop came on as it normally does, but then something very strange happened; A soft 3 note tune played over a few times, and then the entire laptop shut down. When I tried to turn it back on, it resumed playing the tune a couple times, made it to the HP logo as it started up, and then went to a black screen with a small underscore blinking in the upper left-hand corner. It then just sits there with that screen, and goes no further. Despite trying over and over, it does the same thing each time I try to start it up. What has happened? I'm so worried that my laptop is done for! Also, worried about losing my hard drive. Do I need to have a professional back up my files, and then try to re-boot my system? Or is there an easier method to fixing this problem? Help!
