Question about GE Spacemaker JVM1640SJ Microwave Oven

1 Answer

Whirlpool microwave oven

The microwave blew its fuse, we replaced the fuse and the same thing happened. We have tested the three door switches, the magnetron temperature fuse and also the cavity temperature fuse. All these tested OK. When we put in a new fuse, the display flashed. We reset the clock and put a cup of water in the unit and set the timer for 10 seconds. The unit came on and then blew the fuse again. Any help would be appreciated.

Microwave Dead

Having 20 year experience fixing microwaves i know that when the fuse goes that if you can't find a melted wire or overheated components on the circuit board that the high voltage capacitor at the back needs to be replaced. Sometimes you have to replace the magnetron too. You can replace the door switches if you like, microswitches are inexpensive but would only be bad if arced inside so bad that you read over 1 ohm.

Panasonic microwave NNP295SF shuts off after 15 seconds

It is going to be one of three things, the magnetron, " heart of the microwave oven " the inverter board, " if 7 years or less" and finally the keypad control board. In order to break this down, it will require testing to narrow the field. But what ever choice is made, the parts and labour are going to be the big factor when it comes to cost.

I suspect the interlock monitor switch in your microwave oven is the culprit. This is one of several switches operated by the door latches. It's designed to blow the fuse if you try to run the microwave with the door open. The switch is probably stuck, or is out of adjustment (which can happen if the oven door gets closed hard), and when you restarted the oven it blew the fuse. It is possible to adjust or replace the switch as necessary, but it might not be worth it. You should have a professional do the repair as there's a chance of microwave leakage if repairs involving the door aren't done properly. Between labor and parts, the repair cost might come close to (or even exceed) the replacement cost for a small oven.

Hope this helps, and thanks for using Fixya!

I think I need to change the fuses. Where are they?

If a fuse blew, somthing is worng, not the fuse. In that case cheaper to replace the unit. Much more common is safety switch issues. Like door switches....small looseness can make switch not seat or close. Safety first.
A comment about microwave leaking, I used to test TONS of units and never, ever found a machine that leaked microwaves....I quit testing, essentially if the door closes properly, it will not leak.

Dead, replaced fuse and it blew again.

The fuse is connected directly in series with the monitor switch. If it senses one of the door switches bad it will blow the fuse, this is there as an added safety to make sure the oven will not work without the door closed.

There are usually three and sometimes four door switches just inside and to the left of the control panel that are activated when the door interlocks with them. One of the switches is most likely bad. Typically it is the primary interlock which is on top. It can be checked with an ohmmeter, usually you can see it broken as the plunger will not go down or come up like the others.

Went to turn on the mic and heard a pop and now no power. think i blew a fuse. changed it and same thing all over again. any ideas???

I had the same thing to happen to our microwave oven. I went and replaced the fuse in it. Power came back on. Then I tried to pop some popcorn in it. 30 seconds after it started, it made a vibrating noise and shut off. It took the fuse but not the curcuit breaker. The microwave is 14 years old. I have just come to the conclusion that there is buildup all inside the motor parts and that it needs to be replaced. The instruction manuel mentions to replace the monitor switch when replacing the fuse. Since I lost the manuel a long time ago, I asked at Lowes and noone knew what that was....I since found out that it was a safety device installed on the microwave oven so that if the door was not shut completely or was out of alignment, it would throw the fuse. Anyway, I am happy with the service we got with this microwave. It has been through several slammed doors and lots of use. We have been very satisfied with our Frigidare Microwave. It has held up well.

We have a MH7135XEQ1 microwave and the fuse blew on it. We replaced it and it still keeps blowing. What is going on?

You may have a problem with the door switches. There are usually three switches and if the Monitor switch fails or the door isn't closing properly it will blow the main incoming power fuse.

Location of monitor switch for Sharp R-5A54B microwave

It's usually the one in the center, as opposed to the being near the top or bottom edge of the door.

The entire service manual is available for free download on the Sears parts site (page by page) at (the 3 is correct)

Just look for the switch as ref # 1-7 on this diagram:

Blowing fuse problems

The door latch switches, and monitor switch assembly needs adjusting. With the door open the two latch switches should be normally open, and the monitor switch closed. Opposite way when door is closed. MAKE sure oven is unplugged before testing
