If I'm not mistaken, it seems like it means there is a problem with the outdoor temperature sensor. This is strictly from memory though and I could be wrong. If you press the up and down arrow buttons at the same time it should display the outdoor temperature for a few seconds and then the indoor humidity. You might try this to see if it displays an outdoor temperature that is close to being right. If it doesn't there is a good chance the sensor is bad or there is a broken wire somewhere.

I hope this helps!

E1 error code on a cz220 comfort zone model heater what does it mean

The E1 error code on a Comfort Zone CZ220 heater indicates a problem with the high-temperature limit switch. This switch is a safety feature that shuts off the heater if it overheats.
To clear the error code, you can try resetting the heater by unplugging it from the power outlet and waiting for at least 30 seconds before plugging it back in. If the error code persists, it may indicate a more serious issue with the heater that requires professional repair.

Have a comfort zone inferred heater that the display comes on but won't heat up. When I try and turn up temperature I get a AO5 code. What does this mean?

Make sure the unit is clean. Especially, the blower wheel. If that doesn't resolve your error code then follow these instructions.
http://screencast.com/t/RoXS239ndAhF
Look that over please, you can clean the blower wheel at the red arrow, jumper the two switches at the blue arrows as *brief tests only* just to see if the unit runs and begins to heat with the jumpers in place.
If it runs, replace the item that failed open.
If it does not run, the control module, Item 5 marked with green is most likely bad and needs to be replaced.
