How to clean the screen

Use a soft lint free cloth and any glass cleaner. The trick is to spray the cloth instead of the TV screen. Spraying the screen itself could let cleaner run too far down and on to the circuit board. Thanks for using fixya.

Blackout area on screen

Make sure the TEXT and CAPTION options are turned off.

I am not sure about the Sonny's, but on my Toshiba a black box appears when I inadvertently leave one of the close captioning (CC) on for text or captions on (such as CC1, CC2, etc.).

Big black box across the screen towards the bottom.

In some TV's closed captioning can cause this problem. turn off CC and see if that helps.

Our Tv will turn on by itself, at full volume and I can't change the channel. The remote doesn't work at all, the only way to shut it off at all is to unplug it from the wall. It's only about 4 years old...

If someone has ever sprayed glass cleaner or the like on the screen , it's possible that liquid got down into the control button board.
It's fixable but it may be cheaper to buy another new.

Flickering and then nothing

Well, seven years on a SONY is pretty good. These chassis have a good number of plugs and jacks on the main board. If you feel competent enough to open the back of the set, I'd go to Radio shack and buy a can of electronic components cleaner and a can of compressed air. Then, with the cover removed, find the plug that goes to the deflection coil on the neck of the tube. It should have four to six large wires on it. Disconnect the plug and lightly spray the EC cleaner on the plug and jack. If you have an old toothbrush, scrub the pins where they're exposed. Absorb any excess fluid with a paper towel and then blow the connctors dry with the air. Reassemble and test the set. If this doesn't work, your going to have to probe the other connectors with a wooden dowel rod while the set is on. PLEASE be careful around any High Voltage components! There's probably a good layer of dust inside the set as well. This layer can act as a blanket and cause components to overheat so carefully cleaning this out with a vacume wouldn't hurt. Hope this helps. Thanks for rating the solution.
