I have a Sony Trinitron SRS 36" flat screen tv that is only 2 years old. About a month ago, a black box appeared on the bottom half of the screen and random letters flash in the box over and over. The box would eventually go away, but lately it does not unless the tv is unplugged for awhile. The tv is in a cabinet but the entire back of the cabinet is open, so it is not getting too hot. Is this something that is going to be an easy fix or is this a bad problem?

Re: message on tv screen
The text mode in the closed caption is turned on.Turn off the closed caption. I don't have the schematic in front of me, so, I will wing it. There may be a button on the remote that says CC, if so then use that button to turn it off, if not then go to the customer menu and you may have to search a bit. Either way it's an easy fix and you can do it yourself. If you can't find it, then, reply and I will give better instructions when I get into my shop next week.

no ....the tube will end up after 20 yrs in 10 yr old sony... it is worth if u fix it. randomly going black means...horizontal driver trans former is the problem..or any loose contact with the 110 volt supply to that transformer,,or any loose contact with line o/p transformer.. (horizontal driver transformer may be gone then tv behaves like this) if any other parts gone tv wont come back.... there may be a loose contact call a service pro..
I just posted this in a previous message:
"In both cases, I think you are either suffering from a failed power supply or the supply is cycling because of a 'downstream' problem that could be in the high voltage circuit. In each case, the blink count probably would tell you approximately where the problem is located but only a Sony tech will have access to the codes. After all, we are only mortals. "
There may be dry joints in the Line Stage where the Line Transformer is situated. The move may have loosened some components off the board. If not familiar with TV Electronics please refer to a repair technician. Regards and good luck, JUS004
Since you are not using a set top box, you will probably only get channels up into the 70's, if available in your town, as most channels above this are digital, which analog cannot convert. As for the digital tuner, I have the same problen. It will not pick up any digital channels. Because of this, I have had to get a digital box(why in the hell should I have a digital tuner?) to recieve digital channels. I have the same tv you have, except a standard def. If you ever find out why your digital tuner won't work, I'd love to know myself. good luck, hope this helps.
