Re: How do you take the light bulb out of this...

First be sure to unplug the oven or open the circuit breaker.

Some bulbs are screw-in and some need to be pushed in slightly, then turned counter-clockwise.

Sometimes they get a little food grease or oxidation between the threads of the lamp and the socket.

You just have to be persistent. A slow but steady pressure is best, because too much pressure can break the bulb off in the socket.

While that then makes it easier to use pliers, there is the risk of a nasty cut. Gloves might help if it's really tight, or maybe a small piece of rubber strip to improve grip.

Before installing the new bulb, I recommend a thin layer of lubricant (WD-40, Vaseline, etc) to help prevent seizing in the future.

Lights and fan not working on my microwave

was the fan working before you replaced the bulbs? Did you check the old bulbs ie filaments broken....if two bulbs stopped working at the same time probability suggests that the problem was not the bulbs, especially since the breaker fired when you put in new bulbs.
Could be a short inside ...if you are not brave enough to take it apart and inspect better you take to be looked at ...better a fried microwave than a fried you...

Kenmore micrwave overheated. now won't work. is

There is a fuse inside the chassis that can be accessed by removing the 4 side screws and the 6 back screws on the chassis cover. First unplug the unit then remove the 6 screws securing the cover to the shassis. Once the screws are removed lift the rear of the cover about 10 to 15 degrees and pull to the rear. The chassis cover will then come off. NOTE: There is a large capacitor inside the chassis that will stil have a charge. Make sure to avoid it when reaching inside the unit. Follow the power cord from where it enters the chassis to the end terminals. One of them will terminate at the fuse holder. Remove the fuse, obtain a new fuse of equal value amd intall same. Plug the unit in to see if you get some from of power be it a light inside or the contral panel lighting up. If it is just the fuse and you see signs of the unit having power once again unplug the unit and re-install the chassis cover.. Make sure that the cover interlocks on the front of the chassis properly. All mating surfaces should appear flush. Re-install the 6 screws and retun the unit to service. If nothing happens please reply to this post.

I have a GE micrwave, VLM1860sd-001. Both the surface halogen lights and the halogen oven light are out. There is no voltage to these lights (12v). How/where is the power developed for these lights?

We see (and repair) this a lot. The problem is on the control panel, which we regularly repair nationwide by mail for $39.95 postpaid in about a week.

At our Web site, we have a video available showing how to remove a typical over the range control panel assembly in under 5 minutes.

This light failure often occurs when a bulb goes out and the filament shorts, or when the bulbs are removed or installed without first unplugging the oven from the power line. Either can cause such a failure on the controller.

This can often also affect the exhaust fan operation, too. The lights and fan can be inoperable or stuck on too.

Details of our service and critical safety information and disassembly information is at our site, and our link is at our listing here on FixYa.

Feel free to contact me directly (and please remind me of your full model number) for more information & help.

Change the bulb

If there's no obvious removable cover over the bulb (most often on the rear or side) and the owner's manual doesn't address it, then disassembly will be required.

Always unplug a microwave before removing or installing any bulbs.

If it's an over the range type, remove the vent grille across the top and see if bulbs can be accessed there. There may be a panel on the bottom covering the light(s), instead.

If not, chances are you'll have to remove it from the wall, then remove the outer cover. If so, the installation instructions are very handy, and it's best to have two people since the microwave can be heavy and awkward.

If you don't have your instructions, please reply back with your brand and model number.

Once it's out of the wall, the outer cover (wrapper) will need to be removed, just as you'll need to do on a counter top model.

On a counter top model, be sure it's unplugged, but otherwise ignore the instructions above this paragraph.

The screws you need to remove should be pretty obvious, but a special driver (such as a T20H type or GTXH20-100) may be needed.

Be sure to put all the screws back in the right holes, since some may be special grounding screws.

Bulbs can be had in most grocery stores, hardware stores, home improvement centers, and big box or department stores.

Many models use halogen lamps. You must not touch the new one with your bare skin, as the oils will shorten the bulb life.

Replacing light bulb

Remove the screws on the bottom of the unit and the panel drops. You can then remove one screw on the actual bulb holder and use plyers to spin it out. Make sure you disconnect the power.

First unplug microwave. Check to see if there is a cover in front of the bulb that can be removed with a screwdriver normally philips. If not, you must remove the entire top cover for access to the bulb housing. You will have to remove side screws if any, and just the rear screws that hold the top cover on, remember you may find that some if not all may be torc screws. In this case you will need the correct tool.Usually a T20 tamper driver. After you remove the top cover you can find where the bulb cover is and replace the bulb.CAUTION:ALWAYS BE CAREFUL TO KEEP HANDS AWAY FORM THE HIGH VOLTAGE SECTION. Sometimes the high voltage capacitor will not discharge on its own and will retain voltage plugged in or not.

Micrwave starts but then quits

Microwaves should only be worked on by fully qualified repair people and my advice to you would be to bring it to such a person, they can be dangerous to work on due to the presence of such high voltage, other than changing a light bulb any other repairs are out of limit.
