For Music iwould recommend a 3.1 I had a set of harmon/cardon 3.1 speakers and sub, the sound was amazing and the bass can be adjusted to your taste. most of these set ups with the subwoofer have an amplifier in them, so it would boost your volume dramatically
I wouldnt recommend a 5.1 unless you are watching movies, as the 5.1 system sound kinda of twangy.
