When camera is powered on it has a brief display

This is not the issue, I have this camera and it works with any battery.

There could be 1 or 2 things causing this but the most likely solution is that you're lens is not extending completely when you turn it on, which is a common problem with these cameras as they're somewhat fragile.

Next time you turn your camera on try to give the lens a SLIGHT tug to help it extend to it's full length. If it's not at full length then it beeps like you mentioned and turns off.

I've noticed that some cameras are very picky to what batteries they will work on. I have a kodak 713 that will work on nothing but the energizer lithium as well as a garmin handheld gps, neither will stay on with regular batteries. I would check to see if a stronger battery may work better.
