Some part of the mechanism is locked or the encoder strip isn't in position. Look inside the printer and make sure the cartridge carriage moves freely and that there isn't anything that could stall the carriage, check for pieces of paper or other strange objects. Try resetting the printer disconnecting all the cables and holding [CANCEL] and [PAPER SIZE] while connecting the power cable only.
