Re: help my paper shredder is not working.
I personally work with Fellowes brand shredders, but it sounds like you have a paper feed sensor issue. This may be a mechanical or electronic sensor located in the center of the paper feed slot. If it is electronic it may just need cleaning(qtip dipped in rubbing alchohol. If it is a mechanical sensor check to make sure it has not been broken or it may be stuck because of paper that has become wedged behind it(you may need to jiggle the switch a few times to free it). If none of this works you may have a burned out switch or a bad pc board, contact manufacturer for more info.

If your shredder is jamed with paper, the centre of your machine has a switch which is plastic. If there is paper under this switch it will prevent it from being pushed downward, it will not shred paper, it will only work in reverse. Unplug your machine and clear the paper jam so the little plastic switch will be able to go down and it should work. Hope this works for you.
First lesson - NEVER put staples through shredder. Have you been able to remove the staple? Switch all power off, and then look at blade section. If still present - remove staple - may need magnet or tweezers. This should fix the problem, but if it doesn't it seems you may have some teeth out of alignment. This will probably require replacing the shredder bar by a technician, or a new unit.
Disconnect the shredder
Turn the top unit over to reveal the 'teeth'
With a pair of needle-pointed pliers or cosmetic tweezers gently pick out the pieces of paper that you can see. You'll probably notice that there was some self-adhesive label material included (that seems to cause jamming more than staples!
Hope this helps.
Shredders became popular when the identity theft thing started happening and to save money they stopped making them with quiet, powerful induction motors and now it's almost impossible to find a consumer model without the poor quality loud motors that don't have enough to power to operate the machine once it's a little dirty. Anyway, unplug it, and you're doing this at your own risk, take the shredder off the trash can or its own waste bin and turn it over. If it's straight cut shredder you will probably be able to see the slot where the shredder paper exits the blade area. If it's a crosscut shredder there might be a door that will close over the blades to cut you from getting cut. Respect that, but open this door, and see if there's bits of paper jammed up around the blades. Wear some protective gloves and use pliers or some kind of tool to dig out the compacted trash, being careful not to damage or bend the blades. Now you should pick up some shredder oil from your local office store, or see link to order. Follow the instructions on the oil, and this will make your shredder run with a lot less stress. This is only a temporary fix however. In a couple weeks or months you will have to do this again. It's all part of owning a paper shredder. If you like it that much, look into buying a nicer model. You totally get what you pay for with a paper shredder.
