Re: I have a 57 in Sony rear projection..

Usually caused be a secondary device. If you guys have a cable box try this test. Unplug the coax cable from the back of the cable box. plug the coax cable from the wall directly to the TV and do a chennel scan. See if the probelm is still there. If it is TV needs service. If it is is your cable box. Call the cable company. If you have Satelite all you can do to test it is try another device and see if you have the same problem. A dvd player, VCR, game console etc. and see if the problem happends with that as well. If it does then the TV needs service.

Not that you want to hear it but its the begining of the end, you convergance i.c. is starting to go. I had this set a few years back and I fixed it once for around 350, then six months later it dies again. Parts for this style have jumped in cost so I would say 400-500 for repair

Sony KP-51WS500 projection tv. Screen is green with curved lines

The green picture tube has an internal short. Happened a lot with that model. The tubes are no longer availible. But a reputable company called Video Display will rebuild the tube completely. But the tube must be pulled and shipped to them. Most repair shops would charge around $400 to $500 for the complete job.

Thin red horizontal lines across screen

While looking at your TV, remove the bottom right speaker grill. There you will find a cover held by a couple of screws. Remove the screws and behind the cover you will find the "focus pack" which is a group of 6 adjustment screws. The top screws adjust (in order from left to right) the brightness of Red, Green and Blue.

What you will do preferably at night (or with the room dark) turn the top left adjustment screw (Red) all the way to the left and then gradually turn it to the right until the point you can see the retrace line and then turn it slightly to the left until the retrace line disappears. That's it! You can do this for all three colors - if need be. These do go out of adjustment every now and then. The 3 screws on the bottom are to focus the colors individually to minimize "bloom" on the screen. It's best to be in service mode on your TV when doing this OR open up the cabinet and cover (with something) the other 2 colors while you adjust the focus of the color you're adjusting.

Good Luck!

Thin red horizontal lines across screen

replace the focus block or try to adjust the screen control on the focus block for red only. this will affect the white balance of the set so adjust it carefully. the focus block is located on the front inside the set. remove the speaker cover then the 4 screws on the front plate. the focus block is 3" x 2" black box with 6 adjustment posts three for focus and three for screen. adjust only the affected screen (R).
