Bukes1 is actually right. I have the same printer and I'm having the same problem. The MP980 has a black, pixel black, cyan, magenta, yellow, and a grey cartridge, so 6 all together. The grey replacement cartridge is not readily available at a store. You have to purchase it online. I don't understand why Canon does not include it in the color multi-pack. It's quite a nuisance, because when the cartridge runs out you can't print at all.
My friend, someone is pulling your leg ... I dont know everything there is to know about every printer ever built but as far as I know, there is no grayscale ink.
Grayscale is a method of printing not a color of ink, to my mind, has been since I started with the Commodore 64.
If I am materially incorrect on this, someone please set me straight.

With respect sir, the Canon Pixma MP 980 has six tanks one of which is 'grey'. It is not 'Greyscale ink' but merely one of the six tanks required for the thing to work. If ANY of the tanks are empty, nothing works at all, not even scanning. Oh, and although it's not really relevant, I started with 'the opposition' the TRS 80.

In order to print in
Black and White using grayscale, you will need to adjust the printing
preferences within the driver. To change the printer properties complete
the following steps:
1. Open the Printers
Folder:
2. Right click
on the Brother printer driver and left click Printing
Preferences.
3. Click the
Advanced tab.
4. Select
Grayscale.
5. Click APPLY => OK. Your printer will now print in grayscale.
