Grey screen, iPod nano 4g 8gb

I have an iPod nano fourth generation, 8gb. From what I can tell it can't retain a charge as it remains at a black screen when pressing any button. When I plug it into a computer, it flashes a grey screen for several seconds, turns black for several seconds, and cycles this until I press a certain combination of buttons.

Pressing the combination of menu and select prompts me with a reboot and another cycle of grey and black. Pressing back and select shortens the span of grey screens I get.

As for any recognition on my computer, I have gotten it to recognize it twice. After cycling reboots for a couple times, windows started to install the correct drivers for my iPod and iTunes prompted me for a restore. Which I did. Again, it cycled grey and black.

Second time was about the same, but with more frustration. Any help guys?

- Not exactly helpful per se. For one, I believe that usb puts out more than enough juice to charge the nano. Charges my psp-slim that is rated 5volts at 1.2 amps, equivalent to that of my iPod. And I don't have a wall charger either. Second of all, I did reset it. Multiple times. Say 20 times in a row. Every single reset comes with a blinking grey screen. I haven't been able to successfully get the computer to recognize the iPod. I was planning on booting onto my linux partition to run lsusb and see if it is even being recognized, but I don't feel like it at the moment.

Quit trying to charge from the computer, cause a lot of them don't put out enough juice to totally charge the nano.  Turn the thing off and plug this thing into an AC wall charger for about 8 hours.  Then turn the thing on  and press the center button and menu button at the same time to reset the thing.  Then make sure you got the latest itunes edition and plug your cord into the nano and into the computer.  You will be prompted to sync this thing.

- You came looking for advice, but choose to knock it before even trying it.  Why are you even on this site if you know so much?

If it doesn't always and reliably connect to the computer the issue is caused by your logic board, your screen is most likely ok. There is a nano repair guide that shows you how to repair it and a third party nano repair service that can do it for you.
