Philips Magnovox PM61300 VHS-C Adapter not...

I recently bought this Philips Magnovox PM61300 VHS-C adapter for my JVS camcorder Vhs-C tapes. Everytime I put it into the VCR, it does not recognize that there is a tape in there, and when it does recognize it, it will not play the tape and automatically rewinds itself to the beginning of the smaller cassette and the option to record on the green button of the cassette is set to ''off''. Is there a solution to this problem or do I just need to purchase a new adapter?
