You can switch to an external monitor or data projector by two methods. 1. Connect the external monitor to the laptop's video port, power up the external monitor first and the laptop. The video information will automatically switch to the external monitor. 2. If you power up the laptop first then you can switch the video output to the external monitor by pressing the Fn key and one of the Function keys, depending upon your make and model laptop. You can also toggle between the external monitor or both LCD screen plus the external monitor or back to LCD screen only by pressing the Fn key plus one of the function key a few times. Here is a list of key combinations for some of the laptops :- IBM ThinkPad = Fn + F7 HP and Compaq = Fn + F4 Toshiba = Fn + F5 Dell = Fn + F8

You are not providing enough information to help you. Have you set the display to use an external monitor or dual monitor? That is how laptops work with projectors. You normally can set the system for dual display and either mirror the displays or use the second display (projector) for power point or other presentation.
If this does not fix the problem, post more information on why it is not working for you.
go into the BIOS settings and tell it to use the LCD/Monitor as a display.
or
press fn key+(F5 or F7 or F8) 1x or 2x or 3x.....
Fn key combination. The Fn key is located
at the lower left of the keyboard, normally between the CTRL and the ALT
key. Toshiba uses Fn-F5 to toggle between the laptop LCD and an external
display. IBM or Lenovo uses FN-F7, Acer varies with the model, using Fn-F5,
Fn-F3, Fn-F8, Sony Fn-F7, Dell Fn-F8, HP or Compaq, Fn-F4. There are variations
with the age of the laptop and not all manufacturers have standardized on
a key combo across the whole range, but you can usually figure it out from
the little graphics on the function keys that line the top of the keyboard.
Depending on the laptop. Most have a key on the keyboard to toggle external display. Usually, you have to hold the function key [FN] then push the external display toggle.
If it is clear with no lines when it boots and you see the Bios settings and splash screen it maybe ok... it may just be your Display Settings in your Opperating System. Use F5 to go into "Safe Mode" to reset. You toggle F5 at boot and select Safe Mode.
See if you can use an External Monitor. You may need to use the Function F4 Key or one of those to toggle the Monitor. If it works on the monitor and not you display then it could be your display screen. Fixable for 250-350 dollars typically.
If you don't get to Safe Mode sucessfully and not display on the external monitor... could be video card... and that meens motherboard replacement. Part is 200 and labor about 150-200.
Have you tried pressing Fn F5? On my system (HP), by computer monitor goes dark when I connect the projector. Pressing (Function) FN F5 toggles the video between Computer Monitor, Projector, or Both.
Check the function settings for your computer. On my Compaq laptop at home, the video function is F4, so there may be different settings for your computer.
Good luck!
Following an advice in this forum I loaded the launch manager for the travelmate 6592, installed it and It put working on the silver P key of the laptop, i.e. the launch manager, and at the same time the fn+F5 key started to working on again. For a long time this key was disappeared from me laptop, just the same time that the fn+F5 key didn`t work.
