I have the same problem with playing DVD's although music CD's play fine! I have tied a basic cleaner disc but this had made no difference. I was wondering too if it is worth getting it repaired or if there was some sort of service manual to look at (if anyone has one!).

Also, I have seen a cheap DVD player for sale with loads of connections on it but not sure how to connect it to the Sony system so I can still use it for the surround sound. If anyone can suggest the easiest and cheapest way I will do this for now. Just seems a waste of money to give up onthe Sony as it is in MINT condition!

    Anyways, any help appreciated.

    Thanks in advance.

Lasers are mechanical and focusing parts. Over time, mechanical parts can wear out and focusing parts lose focus.

Try a wet/dry laser cleaner using alchol based cleaner. If this doesn't work, connect a cheap DVD player to it so the Sony system can provide audio....

Wont read discs

follow this steps, and use the common sense.God bless you
If the player skips, make sure that the DVD disc is not dirty or scratched..Use the cleaner disk buy it from R. Shack.
If the tray won't open or close properly, check the belt for dirt or wear. Then check the tray for misalignment. If needed, remove, clean, lubricate, and reinstall the tray following the instructions in the owner's manual.

The game cannot be read on our ps2, but the ps2 works for other games. the disk looks fine. what can we try to get this game to play?

Even if the game isn't scratched, you should try holding it under a light to see if there are any fingerprints or smudges on the disc. You can try cleaning the disc with a lint-free cloth if you've got one, though I've never had trouble with a cotton t-shirt. Wipe from the center of the disc straight towards the outer edge. Do this for the entire disc and try it again.

If that doesn't work, please update this issue with the error message you're seeing if any. Does the disc show up in the PS2 browser? Do you get a disc read error? Does the screen just go black when you try to play the game?

I have a 1997 600 bandit and I have replaced the front discs with new kagazumi discs and new pads off ebay,my problem is there is a squeel coming from the feft disc (viewed from on the bike) I have since...

It is not uncommon for discs including car discs after changing pads for the disc to squeel.

Because the disc will inevitably wear with use, the old brake pad that causes the wear will also be worn to fit perfectly to the wear on the disc as at engages, whereby grooves in the disc that are formed will be identically paired to that on the brake pad.

Squeeling is also common for old pads, as well as poor quality badly manufactured cheap pads, or excessive use of brake pads - where they get burnt and are too hard against the disc or dust fibres from the brake pad get caught within pad and disc. It could even be a combination of these that causes squeeling.

When you change the pads which are now new and being smooth and unworn they do not mate up anymore with the groove marks created from the wear of the old pads. The discs when brake pressure is applied will always vibrate to some extent, even on new bikes, however if imperfections exist such as the fact there is no wear marks from new pads rubbing against the old disc with its worn imperfections or even improper fitting etc occurs - they will sing in a high pitched squeel at certain speeds, even with good quality pads.

Other than ensuring all items are set up correctly, get a good quality brake pad and if it continues squeeling consider replacing the disc rotar itself or get the old one machined by a mechanic shop to be smooth again.

Unable to read the disc.

In most cases when the CD does not play it is possible that the optical head is a suspect. Sometimes it might pick up ordinary audio CD but will not play other formats. This indicates that the optical head is weak and so there is no detection or scanning of the CD . If the optical is working the tracks will be read immediately but with no scanning the laser head can be defective.
Sometimes certain cleaner disks will not be tracked to run for cleaning as it will not be read and so will reject. Hence it is ideal to manually clean the laser head eye using a cleaning swap /cotton bud with gentle pressure on the lens eye.
If there is no result then watch if the CD spins or tries to spin. If so the board seems to work unless a test is taken on the main board but the possibility of a defective optical head can be the suspected fault.
If any of the above seems otherwise we must recheck with possibilities of a malfunction of the main processor board

Irregular performance...

sounds to me like your laser is gone.
Some discs are harder to play than others as some are multilayed, check online as to whether it is suitable to use laser cleaners these are like discs with soft brushes attached, you can get them from pretty much any computing place, i wouldnt know whether its sensible to use on a DVD player, but couldnt hurt anymore eh?

Reads a new disc, but after a few uses will not read.

First try cleaning the heads with a kit that may be obtained at many discount stores. If that doesn;t work, It really sound like a drive head alignment problem. Not a service preformed w/o equiptment.
