Spin Cycle Problems / Noise

Hey Experts!

Our washing machine, a Whirlpool Ultimate Care II - LSN1000LW0, is giving me a hassle. The other night, as it entered spin cycle, it started making a horrendous knocking noise (almost like an "unbalanced load" knock). I re-adjusted the load and tried again......same noise. I ran to Sears in the morning and purchased a motor coupler (I had already replaced two in the past), but when I went underneath, the coupler was intact.

After rigging the lid switch to spin with the lid open, the inner basket spins very slowly and I am assuming the knocking is coming from the fact that whatever is trying to drive the inner basket is slipping (or whatever) and not engaging the basket for "full spin".

So, I am wondering what's the dealie-o. I removed the motor and pulled the drive shaft out. Everything "looks intact"....meaning I don't see any broken pieces or springs laying around, but obviously something is busted. That is what has brought me here. Can anyone offer some assistance?

Ok. Pulled the gear case and opened 'er up. Half of the "Gear Spin" was shaved off. Ended up ordering the "Gear Spin" kit (part #285362), seal (better safe-than-sorry fix - part #3349985), and the gear oil (part # 350572). I already have gasket sealer .........;) .

    Looks like that'll do 'er!

Repaired gearbox (transmission) with above parts and installed. Didn't work, motor coupler was just spinning like crazy. So, it may have been a combination of problems.

    1. After repair, I carried the gearbox around by the shaft - which may have pulled the clutch out. I had to re-seal the gearbox anyway (had a little leak), so I re-sealed the gearbox and made sure the spin gear was engaging. Then.....carried the gearbox by the BOTTOM. ;)

    2. I had installed the "Spin Tube Thrust Washer" upside down. This is the washer that sits on top of the clutch. It is correctly installed with the little tabs facing down toward the clutch and "in between" the opening of the "C" Retaining Ring and the little "loop" on the other side. Also, the "Brake Cam Driver", the plastic piece that looks like a big washer with "fingers" (part # 285790), sits inside the clutch with the "fingers" on the opposite side of the clutch spring.

    3. Instead of laying the washing machine on its side to install the gearbox (like I did to remove it), I leaned it up against the wall so I could install the gearbox without the "Spin Tube Thrust Washer" falling out of place and so I could line it up better. After the gearbox was installed, I laid the unit on its side again to install the motor.

Machine is now fixed and catching up on almost 2 weeks of laundry! WooHoo!

Whirlpool washing machine make loud noise after spin cycle quits. Noise continues until cycle winds down. Sounds like a machine gun being fired

Hello, have to tell you that most noises from a washing machine occur during the spin cycle. If you hear loud thumping noise during the spin, the load of cloth may have become unbalanced. Stop the washer and redistribute the cloths, then restart the machine. Repeat these steps if necessary.

Dear shelldon39, Fri 2-20-2009 9:24pm EST (USA)

Some machines will shut down during the spin cycle as a precaution to prevent damage!

They will do this if you overload the washer with clothes and/or use too much detergent!

If this doesn't help please get back to me with more details!

Excess water in clothes after spin cycle

Unblock the outflow pipe from the machine that goes into the sump under the sink. (have a pot ready for water overflow) This will help drain the water. If the spin cycle is making a screetching sort of noise then it is possible that the carbon brushes will need changing. This affects the spinning if the brushes are worn.

Whining noise, only in rinse and spin cycle, sounds awful.

Check the pump to make sure there isn't something stuck in it.
