When I try to lower the volume on my Acer Aspire

When I try to lower the volume on my Acer Aspire 5517 it doesn't change the sound....I actually want to mute it at times...am I doing something wrong?

use the Fn(function key on the left side of the keyboard. While holding Fn hold the down arrow to turn the volume down.
