GE GSS25VGMA WW Ice/water dispenser

The flap to the ice dispenser stays open when you get ice threw the door. It locks open and you have to manually force the flap closed aftre each use.

Also the water dispenser works hit or miss. It has not worked for about two weeks now. In the past it would not work for a few days and then work fine for a while.

Any suggestions to either of these problems?

Re: GE GSS25VGMA WW Ice/water dispenser

My solenoid was rusted up due to water condensation in that area.
To get to the solenoid and the ice flap:
Under the control panel there are two holes if you look up under it.
Push a small object into each hole and the control panel will come out.
Release the clips that hold the three wiring harnesses onto the control board, unplug the wiring harnesses and set the control board aside.
Take the 4 corner screws out of the unit that sits behind the control panel and set that unit aside. From there you will be able to see the flaper. The seloniod sits on the left side.
Take the screws out that hold it in and remove it. There is a plunger on the top that should be free to move up and down. It should slide right out but yours might be a little locked up. Pull it out and clean the rust off. Also clean the hole it goes down into. Mine was in bad shape and all rusty but still worked after I cleaned it all up. I ended up spray painting the plunger and the solenoid to prevent future rust and it works like new. (not sure how much a new one is, that might be the better solution).
Now I'm trying to figure out how to stop the water condensation so it doesn't happen again.

I found that a liberal application of WD40 use the extension tube to direct it up into the flap mechanism works a treat and frees the solinoid. Clean of excess with paper towels so you dont get WD40 onto your dispensed ice cubes.

It sounds like you have a bad flapper solenoid

Ice door flap will not close

I had a similar problem once. i opened the door and used a hair dryer blowing into the dispensing area of the door. There was a ice build up that was not visible with a quick look. It takes a while so be patient when thawing and be sure not to use too high of setting so you dont deform any of the plastic parts.

I have a GE Refrigerator GSS22JFMD WW with a ice

The water supply in the recessed part of your door is frozen. very common with this model. You will need to turn unit off and with freezer door open use hairdryer on the area where water dispenses and on the recessed area as well. This is time consuming but only other remedy is to leave off and door open for 24 hours. hope this helps.

GE mod #gsh22kgmb ww. port thru which ice exits

Try cleaning the edges of the flap and the ice chute as well. Once you've done that, check to see if the pivot rod is fully engaged at end side, as having it out of position could be causing it to "hang up" and not fully close.

If the rod has been knocked out of position, reposition it with your hands then you can lightly lube each end at the pivot points, with a food grade silicon lubricating spray. Use ONLY a food grade lubricant so you don't end up getting nasty tasting ice cubes or contaminating the cubes as they pass thru the chute and flap.

If that doesn't resolve the problem, you'll need to remove the chute & flap assembly from the dispenser section of the door and check for the return spring engagement, as it may have become disconnected and as a result, isn't closing the flap fully, as it should.

To do this, you'll need to remove the trim bezel around the dispenser section with a plastic putty knive (to avoid scratching the trim). be very careful when prying the bezel, do it VERY carefully so as not to snap/break the trim piece. Once you have that removed, you can see and get at the retaining screw(s) that hold the chute & flap assembly on the door panel.

Check the line drawing attached for proper part placement of the spring (part #63) and for seeing how your particular dispenser is attached to the freezer door.

Hope you find this Very Helpful and best regards!

Hi, I have had a similar situation. In my case the filter needed to be replaced. Otherwise the water solenoid is bad or clogged. And check the water supply valve. Best of luck. , Tim

Ge, tfx26kpda ww, ice maker only dispences crushed ice

At least yours is making ice. Mine wount even make ice. While toubleshooting my prob, I notice a metal rod on the bottom of the ice tray. This rod opens and shuts a plastic "trap door" in the tray. The position of that door determines whether the ice is crushed or whole. If the trap door is open the ice falls through the dispenser freely. If the door this closed the ice is force thorugh metal teeth where it is crushed then dispensed. Open the freezer door and take the ice tray out. You should see a hole at the back of the freezer that the metal rod goes through. In that hole there is a plastic square that moves up and down. If the set your dispenser to crushed ice, leave the door open, push in the door switch at the bottom, and press the dispenser. The plastic square does nothing while the motor is turning. That allows the door to stay closed and forces the ice through the metal teeth. If you set the dispenser to whole ice and do the same thing the plastic square is suppose to lift up forcing the door open and letting the whole ice drop freely. The plastic square probably does nothing even if you set it to whole ice. That mean the trap door never opens focing the ice to always get crushed.

Unfortunately, I have no solution because mine works and I had no need to investigate further. I hopes this helps you figure out the problem though

Good Luck.

Ice dispenser flap/door will not close properly

I have a similar problem. The repair guy took a look at it and stated everything is working and did not order any solenoid or any other parts. After he left the problem returned where ice comes down the chute it tends to lodge and keep the door open. I am disagreement with the repair guy and am leaning toward the idea that the spring has lost tension and is just too weak to close with any authority. There is a video on how to replace the spring on youtube. This is what I will be doing next weekend and will try to return to post results.
