I too have this drive not working right now, and have uninstalled and reinstalled it and it doesn't need updating accdg to msgs. It does have the exclamation point lit up. I have recently renamed it because a signature mini external memory box took the E. I couldn't remember if it was an E or F in the past but have made the memory box a J: and the Lite an E: Was that wrong?
It lights up briefly when I put in any kind of disk and the prompt asks me to insert a disk if I ask it to read it. And thanks, this has driven me nuts and kept me from some important stuff.

Right click on My Computer and select properties. Now select the Hardware tab and then click the Device Manager button. Look at the DVD/CD-ROM entry. Do you see your drive listed? Is there a question mark or exclamation point next to it? If it's listed and there is no question mark or explanation point then your problem is most likely a hardware failure of the drive itself. Your DVD drive is one of the few things in your computer that has moving parts and they tend to fail more often. If, on the other hand, you don't see a listing for the drive in Device Manager or you see an exclamation point or question mark then there may be a software solution so let me know.

Lastly, the reason lots of folks don't respond to this type of question is because it is most likely a hardware failure and therefore there is no way for us to make a suggestion that will fix your problem. We don't get paid for this, most of us just like to help solve problems. So, if you find any of this useful I hope you'll rate the solution kindly even though it may not be physically possible to fix your problem.

My ps2 slim cannot read the ps2 cd game after I'm use it to play a movie dvd.. but it still can play dvd at all..assist me please....

Your laser is probably on its way out -- as a laser starts to fail, it will first stop reading PS2 games (but will read some DVD movies OK). It will then stop reading DVD movies and only play CDs. Finally, it will not read anything at all. You can find a new laser, based on your PS2's model number, at the following website:

When i put an Xbox 360 game in it tries to play it as a DVD movie. please help!!!

When you try to play a DVD movie or an Xbox 360 game disc on your Xbox 360 console, you may receive an error message. This article presents step-by-step guidance to help you determine whether your disc is playable.
SYMPTOMS When you try to play a disc, you may receive the following error message: Can’t read this DVD.
CAUSE The DVD or game disc may be dirty or damaged. Because the console cannot read the disc well, it may even mistake a game disc for a DVD and report this error. If this problem occurs with multiple discs, even clean and undamaged discs, there may be a problem with your Xbox 360 console.
Note If you receive a different error message, such as one of the following messages, the problem is a different problem:
Error message 1 Can't play DVD. Wrong region code. Error message 2 Can’t play DVD. Family settings restrict playback of this DVD. If you receive one of these error messages, see the corresponding Knowledge Base article: 907620 While attempting to play a standard DVD movie using your Xbox 360 console, you receive the error message: "Can't play DVD. Wrong region code" 908645 While attempting to play a DVD movie using your Xbox 360 console, you receive the error message: "Can’t play DVD. Family settings restrict playback of this DVD"

THINGS TO TRY Here are some things that you can do to try to fix the problem or to determine what caused it.

Determine whether the disc is dirty or damaged Discs that are smudged, scratched, or otherwise damaged cannot be read by the Xbox 360 console. You will want to examine the disc to see whether it has smudges, scratches, or other damage. To do this, follow these steps: 1. Examine the disc for dirt or damage: a. Pick up the disc by its edges. Do not touch the top or bottom surface. b. Examine the shiny side of the disc to make sure that the disc is clean and has no damage.
NoteScratches that follow the curve of the disc are very damaging and prevent a disc from being read. If your disc has even one of these kinds of scratches, the disc is damaged, and you will no longer be able to play it. If this is the case, see step 4. 2. If the disc is dirty, clean the disc by hand: • Use a soft, clean, dry, chemical-free cloth to clean the disc. • Lightly wipe from the center of the disc outward. 3. After you clean the disc, try to load it in the Xbox 360 console. If the disc still will not load or you receive the same error message, the disc is damaged, and you will no longer be able to play it. If this is the case, see step 4. 4. If the disc is damaged, do one of the following: • Because DVD discs are not game discs and the disc was damaged because of misuse of some type, such as not storing the disc in its case, the only thing that you can do is buy a new one. • If you feel that the disc was damaged by the Xbox 360 console in some way, please contact Xbox Customer Support. To do this, please visit the following Microsoft Web site:

Ps2 wont play DVDs

Your PS2 laser is wearing out. When the laser starts to go, first games will skip... then eventually the PS2 will stop reading DVDs altogether. If you keep using it to read CDs, it will eventually stop reading those too and the laser will die altogether. Here's a website that will help you identify your PS2 model, show you how to replace the laser, and they sell parts and do repairs too

Rented videos are freezing temporarily during playback

If the rented DVD is too scratched it will cause the DVD player to pause while it tries and find the next available playable area on the disc. This may cause the player to skip to another part of the movie. Try wiping the disc with a damp cloth from the centre towards the outer rim and dry the same way. Fingerprints ect. also cause problems. If the scratches are circular the player will have a hard time trying to play the disc. If the scratches are straight and small it shouldn't cause too much problems.

Dvd playback

Is yours an original Playstation or a Slim?

Likely your lens is just dirty. Ars put up a great tutorial for this repair (I advise you not to play with the lens-adjustment section unless a mere cleaning doesn't work) here:

If it's a Slim, skip the "opening" stuff and just follow the instructions for cleaning the lens, it's already exposed when you open the top of the unit.

Can I playback my movies on a DVD-ROM drive?

No, DVD-RAM disc recorded on the DVD Camcorder will not play back on every drive. Some of the new DVD-ROM drives designed to be compliant with the new DVD-RAM book2 standards will playback discs recorded on the DVD Camcorder. Many previous DVD-ROM drives on the market that came out before the DVD-RAM standard was released will not play back discs recorded on the DVD Camcorder. HITACHI manufactures DVD-ROM drives for some PC manufactures as OEM products. HITACHI model GD-7500 DVD-ROM has DVD-RAM read/write compatibility.
