Cassette Tape stuck

I have a Sony TC-WR645S dual cassette tape deck with a cassette tape stuck in one of the decks (it was trying to REW when it stopped and got stuck). Every time I turn on the deck, it seems to try to FF or REW the tape for a couple of seconds, but nothing happens, and I cannot eject the tape. Is there a way to remove the tape?

Tried that. Unfortunately, the eject button is a manual type of eject -- not electronic. Thanks though.

Have the same problem - the deck gets very little use - I saw on another post to take the cover off and manually unlocking it - I was able to get the tape out, but the deck wants to go into a FF or REW mode and none of the buttons respond - thus causing the tape to get stuck again.

I last played a tape not more than a month ago and the deck worked perfectly - not sure why it is causing problems on both A and B decks

Same problem. Can't open the compartment where I inserted a tape. It will wind and re-wind, but the door won't open. And the empty compartment won't open either.

follow on to "Guest: post 27 Jan 08. I also with the cover removed cleaned the capstans and belts with a q-tip and alcohol - had some moderate success with the A deck, but none for the B deck. I saw on another posting to replace the belts - any suggestions on where to find replacement belts and how hard are they to replace? Can I do this myself or should I take to the shop? Thanks

These are really meant to be throw away items- buying another of the same thing just throws more money down the drain, Learn for the experience of this one and move up to something that is good.

I own a TCS-310, perfectly working except the FF/REW control. The engine seems to get active as it produces the normal "play noise", but nothing is apparrently moving. Any advice?

Most of these least expensive unit have this problem as the mechanism are not designed like the large solenoid models were that last many years- some 30. The belt that drives the flywheel where the mechanism movement is loose or broken and it is even with a good belt that the mechanism needs lubrication. This would all be taken care of by a repair Technician. I work on units all the time but I don't know if this priced of unit would qualify for repair as repair can cost over $100.

It needs new belts. Not easy to do yourself. I have done one and it is very difficult. Must also align gear wheel which will probably go out of alignment while you are trying to replace the belts. Big pain. Cheaper to just buy another used model or better yet a new one.

How does one take the cover off?

Posted on Feb 02, 2008

Try pushing the eject button while pusshing the power button. Mine was doing the same and that is how I was able to eject the tape.
Good luck

Belt replacement in a sony tc-wr645s tape deck

I have just spent half a day trying to replace the drive belts in my sony twin deck unit , in the end it still didnt work as the the old rubber belt did some damage to the unit , anyway shops like **** smith or tandy stock the drive belts , take the front of the unit away from the main case there will be a plastic casing that surrounds the belts there are at least two belts, there should only be two small screws undo these and move the plastic unit forward on the plastic mounting brackets then you will see the metal wheel and the plastic wheel that you fit the belt around , its a bit fiddly but i can do it in my sleep now even though the motor died it was a good experience

Cassette Tape stuck

The problem here is that the unit is stuck in a partial position. The "reset" by unplugging and plugging back in usually causes the unit to reset to a known position. If there is no activity (no motor sound), it will need to be opened up and reset manually. If you hear the motor running for a short period, it is attempting to reset, but the belt is most likely worn or broken. These units are relatively simple, but a bit tricky to dis-assemble. This repair should not require anything other than a belt or 2. Figure on $3-$10 for parts plus the local labor rate for the repair.
