After starting exceed 8.00, get past splash screen, get popup about video settings invalid, will use default, then nothing. checking task mgr shows exceed.exe using 90+% CPU. unable to kill this exceed.exe from task manager, have to reboot.
oddly, if I start a second exceed.exe, it gives me the icon bar, and can be used to receive xterm windows (using
any ideas what I can do to get the first exceed to respond and not tie up the CPU, which results in slow responses across the system?

SOURCE: svchost
"Svchost.exe" (Generic Host Process for Win32 Services) is an integral part of Windows OS. It cannot be stopped or restarted manually. It manages 32-bit DLLs and other services. At startup, Svchost.exe checks the services portion of the registry to construct a list of services that it needs to load. In normal conditions multiple instances of Svchost.exe run at the same time. Each Svchost.exe session can contain a grouping of services, so that separate services can be run depending on how and where Svchost.exe is started. This allows for better control and debugging. The svchost.exe file is located in the folder C:\Windows\System32. In other cases, svchost.exe is a virus, spyware, trojan or worm! To detect if it's a virus sometimes it will add letters to the Svchost to read thus SSVCHOST or SVCCHOST or something like that, thus making multiple services to run and slow down the computer, if that is the case the current antivirus you are using is not removing the virus, this can be done in the registry, its a complicated process if you do not know how to do it, so i would suggest you purchase a registry cleaner. NOTE: remember to backup the registry before you clean it

Try deleting it manually, go into safemode with cmd prompt only.
del c:\[filedir][filename]
it will induce an error next time it runs, but you can regedit.exe your way out of that one

I would re install the software, what ever is happening here will probably stop by re-installing it, if you paid for the software then contact the company and complain big style (or just complain).
Goto Strart and then
Run
write "msconfig" inside Run tab and press 'enter'
inside the 'Sys config utility' window click on 'startup' tab then uncheck all
the applications except your current antivirus and press apply then 'ok' and
then 'exit without restart' option.
Now right click My Computer and go to properties tab.
click 'Advanced' tab then under performance menu click on 'settings'
goto 'Advanced' click on 'change' and increase your virtual memory to 2048 in
both spaces.
now restart windows.
To quickly restart windows press CNTRL+ALt+DEL
inside task manager you will find all the open applications .
right click on each applicaion and click on end process tree then ok
Close all your apps like this and you will find your windows a lot faster and
now you can reboot or turn off your windows as usual from start button.
There are many things that
might cause your PC to run slowly. It could be a fragmented disk; fragmented
registry; a virus, trojan, or spyware; high CPU and/or utilization due to too
many programs running; high disk I/O; or something else. If you feel that my answers has helped you in any way then
please give a vote. Thanks.
To check your CPU and memory utilization, run Task Manager. You can start Task
Manager by pressing CTRL+ALT+DEL
and then clicking on the Task Manager button. In Task manager, click on the
Performance tab and check CPU Usage and PF Usage. PF Usage is an indicator of
memory usage. If one or both of these is high, click on the Processes tab, and
sort the columns by CPU or Memory to see what processes are consuming the
resource. If you are not sure what the process "Image name" is for,
google the name and you should find what the process is for.
If your CPU and memory usage are reasonable, then you may have a different
issue. Even if you running anti-virus software, it may be beneficial to scan
your PC with another scanner to check for viruses. No anti-virus software is 100%
perfect at catching everything. Here are a few good free online virus scanners
that you can run to check your PC:
