Replacing maps The disk drive on my Garmin 2620 is full of maps. I want to remove some and add different ones. How do I do this, or worst case scenario, how do I reformat the disk drive on my 2620 ? Thanks for any info. Dan in Scotland.

During the calibration, my garmin 2620 fails on the basemaps. How do I reformat if needed and reload the maps?

    Thanks,

There is a solution of sorts on the Garmin web site, it suggests loading a small tile, approx 25 Kb in size which will over write the maps already on the 2620 BUT the pictures of how to do this are missing from the Garmin web site.

I'm having the same issue. I bought my 2620 while living in europe and it is full of european maps.  Now that I am back in the US I have purchased the City Navigator North America V8 but I can only load a few of the maps before I get a full drive message.

You cant... Garmin sucks at support for doing stuff like this. They want you to buy a new one instead, only to find out its obsolete in a few years and then your new one is not supported in lets say in the year 2010.
That is why the Flash model 2010 and 2050 were more popular. Gave users more options and less moving parts for there unit to break.

Hey guys - If your "disk is full" - and it won't let you load additional maps... you have to take some stuff off it... Connect it to your computer, my compute, right click and get to Explorer - find the 2620 drive. Open it. Now look for speach.. remove all the languages you don't use. If you are in Gernany, then keep German. Do the same for the HELP, and TEXT. Keep only the language you really need. This should free up space on your hard drive. I got this direct from Garmin USA. - I'm trying to upload the 2009 Maps for USA and I had the disk is full problem. Good Luck - Hope this helps... someone!... Peace! John

One can install & over write the City Navigator NA 2008 update onto the 2620 by using the DVD disk direct to the unit. Don't attempt to use the Map Source software to do the update. Make sure you use the drop down list to identify the Garmin unit's drive as the write to drive.

Hi there,
Save hours of searching online or wasting money on unnecessary repairs by talking to a 6YA Expert who can help you resolve this issue over the phone in a minute or two.

Where can I get a new 2.2 GB magicstor hard drive

There are many different compatible CF cards for the removable CF version of the 2620 that will work. A search of "Garmin 2620 CF" will yield what you are looking for for around $15.

Need new hard drive

If it is the CF version you can pick up a compact flash drive from EBAY by typing "Garmin 2620 CF" and the options will come up. However, if it is the cornice drive version getting a new drive is near impossible. I purchased a Phillips HDD 060 MP3 player from E-Bay for $28 as it had a 1.5GB Cornice drive in it already formatted for Windows. This worked and I just used Map Source to reinstall the maps. I've ordered 2 other MP3 players to see if they have a drive and can be used. If so I will post them. I am almost certain the RIO Nitrus has the 1.5GB drive in it; however I am not certain it is formatted for Windows. There isn't anyway to format them without a device to read the drive format as Cornice drives are a proprietary interface and the company being out of business has put a damper on replacement parts and tools to be able to try to format or fix drive problems.

To change that drive is 6 screws for the back case, pull it apart, but be careful as to not rip apart the ZIF cables that connect the back to the front. Disconnect one side of the ZIF cables (there are two) and then the ground connector and other 3 screws holding the circuit board to the back of the unit. There are 4 screws securing the Cornice drive housing, remove those and disconnect the ZIF connector on the Cornice drive. When you reinstall the drive reverse the process and you're good. After restarting there will be no maps, but the system should start up (not loop as before with the bad Cornice drive). If it doesn't then the replacement drive you purchased used is probably bad too, or wasn't installed properly. A quick check using Menu Find (holding them both down during startup) will provide a diagnostic and after about 1 minute the drive information will show up. If it does then the drive is working. Let me know if you have any additional questions and good luck.

The garmin 2620 will not load maps

You are caught in a loop most likely caused by a failed microdrive. Search Garmin 2620 cornice for a thread that is likely to provide the information about the failure you are experiencing. In short, if it is the Cornice drive that has failed you will find it very difficult to repair, if not impossible depending on your level of expertise and ability to find a used part for repair as the drives needed are no longer manufactured or readily available.

connect your GPS to your PC and load your local maps to the hard drive. Maybe update your firmware as well. Good luck.

Won't boot up

I have a same problem, and I think I can fix it, may be not. Any how, I bought a cornice drive on eBay and as soon I will get it. I will load my maps on to it with usb connector after that I take it a part and remove it from its case. Then I will take my Garmin Streetpilot 2620 apart remove the old cornice drive and install the new drive. I suspect it will work like a charm. To check your GPS at boot push and hold "menu-find" buttons simultaneously and you will get a screen to verify your problematic cornice drive.59c5167.jpg

Most likely your hard drive is gone bad. Push "menu+find" buttons then turn on, you will get diagnostic screen, it will show if your cornice drive is bad. It will say"Cornice Dive removed"4f3efc6.jpg

In February I posted that I will replace the cornice drive on my 2620 because I had this problem 019d1f6.jpg Well I did that, but could not fix the problem. Garmin is asking $275 to replace my unit, I did not wanted to pay them that much. So I bought a 2610 at eBay for a $100 and don't have to worry about hard drives any longer.
To get this screen on a GPS push "menu+find" and then turn on unit. It will show this diagnostic screen.
