Excellent information Fixr2! I now have to wait until this weekend to try your solution. I'll let you know how it turns out. I GREATLY appreciate your input.

I wondered why the case was so stubborn to open after I removed the screws. The clips make perfect sense. How many screws (total) are there to remove?

Needs a little brute force. Release all screws you can find. At the bottom above the o of the word Sony is a plastic lip (or clip) which you cannot see, but holds the camera together.
Do be affraid to pull a bit and it will come off.

Wait... I still have my cam open, and here I also see a clip slighty to the left of the power button. You should be able to put a small screwdriver between the to different casing parts and apply a little pressure tot unclip it. Same applies to the bottom, offcourse..

Your very lucky. At my work they disposed two S40 which are both broken. So I have no option but to open them up. I'm going to try to fully disassemble and assemble the cams and hope it'll work.

My challenge is to detach the small flatcables.

    Glad to have helped.

I have a blank white screen when i turn it on..It takes pics but can't see them on camera and can not see menu...

LCD display is either blank or WHITE. When the cabinet is opened or LCD flexible cable is touched, the symptom disappears. This is caused by connection defect or poor contact between connector and LCD flex cable due to the pressure or stress created by the rib in the front cabinet to the connector.

Refer to pictures shown in attached supporting graphics below for the correction procedure.

Sony cybershot dsc-s40 lcd screen is all white

okay the lcd being white means its replacment of lcd time and not the camersa itself. But to rule that out try taking a pic if you cannot you might got a shutter issue as well.

Thanks hope the information helped

Blank Screen

I have been facing the same problem with same model and this is permanent problem it seems with this model (Sony Cybershot DSC S40). It causes because of the following:

LCD display is either blank or WHITE. When the cabinet is opened or LCD flexible cable is
touched, the symptom disappears. This is caused by connection defect or poor contact between connector and LCD flex cable due to the pressure or stress created by the rib in the front cabinet
to the connector.

Send me a email and I shall send you the solution (two files) received from Sony authorized person. You have to open the camera to solve this. Do not open the camera . Just get the idea about where the problem is. I never opened the camera even after seeing this solution 2 yrs back. However, I have a plan for going to service centre with this solution. I hope they can open the camera and solve this. But not getting time to go there in service centre.

I used the following temporary solution and it works to get LCD in its normal condition:

LCD looks like a rectangle is not it? Hold the camera in its normal position as you are going to take a picture (camera is switched on and you are not seeing anything in the LCD, which looks white or dull). Now GENTLY PRESS by the thumb of your right hand at a place near to LCD at the BOTTOM RIGHT CORNER of the rectangle (remember not on the LCD (rectangle) but just outside of it) until you see the normal colour of your LCD. Do few times starting with less pressure and then slightly increase it untill you see a normal LCD. I have been following this procedure for the last 2 yrs and not feeling to go for serving. (This solution I found in a forum only).

Good luck!

Screen is white and doesn't display area being photographed. Can take pictures.

1. Hold camera firmly in left hand.
2. Smartly rap front of camera with knuckles of right hand on the "Cyber-shot" logo.
Worked for me :)

Lcd screen

My Sony DSC-S40 camera went from working fine to having a snowy white display screen and no shown images or data without anything to cause it happening. It was in a good safe location at my PC desk no humidity or high temperatures etc etc. It still took photos and I could still connect to my PC and download and view photos but the camera LCD display screen showed nothing but white.
I have just spent an hour on the internet and located the website below with link attached and I have also posted the comment there in quotes.

I tried pushing on the screen in all corners but no change.
I then did as suggested and gave the front of the camera a firm tap on the Cyber-shot logo with my index finger knuckle and hey presto the display is working 100% AOK now.

Post subject: Sony DSC-S40 White LCD Fault Problem
Archived from groups: rec>photo>digital (more info?)

From Davy

"After 18 months of use, and 6 months beyond the warrantee period, my DSC-S40
screen showed just plain white. I contacted Sony and was quoted 115 UK
pounds ($230) fixed charge to repair it.
Before sending it off I did a quick search of the internet and was amazed to
find that this is a common fault - the flexible cable to the LCD screen has
a design problem and tends to come loose. I was even more amazed to read
that the owner can easily fix it by rapping with a knuckle on the
'cybershot' logo on the front of the camera or pressing ******* the lower
right of the screen surround.

You would think that Sony would come clean on this and own up to its design
fault. I wonder how many owners have actually sent off for repair? -
probably not many cos the repair cost is priced to be just slightly higher
than the original price of the camera - clever! Its a bit ironic really cos,
although the camera had a lesser spec than competing cameras at the price, I
chose it because it was Sony and therefore I believed would be more reliable
and better supported. Seems those days are long gone!

Anyway if anyone else is having the same problem then that's the fix - but I
don't know how long for. A longer term fix is to remove the back of the
camera and push the flexible cable plug hard into the socket of the LCD.
But I can't find how to get the back off! "
