Acer travelmate 4200 'F5' key not working

The 'F5' key which should toggle the display from screen to monitor does not work. I can use the graphics menu to achieve the change, but not 'Fn+F5'. any ideas?

thanks for your offer - I tried it and found out what the little 'z' icon is - it puts the laptop into standby mode.

I have the same problem with an Acer 4070 and 6592. It appears to have been initiated after the Acer WPG (Wireless Projector) software was installed onto the laptops. The other function keys work, but they no longer display their action on the screen (e.g. Volume), on the 4070 the Mailing hot-key appears to be US. I am able to access the graphic displays from the desktop, but my users insist they would like the Function keys (Hot Keys) to work!!

  • Hagar Schoeman Feb 01, 2008

I have installed the launch manager - it works just great for the hot-Keys, but it does not resolve ths issue with the F5!!! but thanks.

I appologise - am having a blond moment - & do not know how to respond to answers!! The F5 key does work in other sofware. The Fn F5 problem I have now encountered in 2 LapTops.

    Thanks though

  • Hagar Schoeman Feb 04, 2008

I ams still sitting with this problem- I believe it may have to do with the installation of the Wireless Acer projector, as this problem arose (in both Lap-Tops) after the installation of the Projector software. I have installed Launch manager & I have tested my F-Keys in other applications - there they work. But the Fn & F5 still somehow are not married to the function they are supposed to be. - Is there perhaps another software required to be installed??

Following an advice in this forum I loaded the launch manager for the travelmate 6592, installed it and It put working on the silver P key of the laptop, i.e. the launch manager, and at the same time the fn+F5 key started to working on again. For a long time this key was disappeared from me laptop, just the same time that the fn+F5 key didn`t work.

Try updating or reinstalling the Acer Launch Manager. The Fn + F5 will only work if the dual display mode is set to "Clone" and not "Extended Desktop" so far as I've tested.

My friend had this problem on his Acer TravelMate 3274. I went to the Acer Europe site and downloaded a new version of the Launch Manager from: http://support.acer-euro.com/drivers/notebook/tm_3270.html

Installed, restarted and keys worked like a dream.

My Acer lost Fn F5 functionality, too. But directly after automatic Windows Updates. I am sure that Windows Updates is the culprit.

Hi

Try using the function key F5 in windows and other softwares... This is to determine that the key is not defective, because if it does then at least you have the idea that it is really a problem... Then have it checked by a technician to make remedy or to a repair shop to replace the part..

Good luck... Fixya!

Make sure the vga cable is in tight on the kav-60 and the external monitor.

Try the keystrokes to toggle the display. Normally you would Press and Hold the FN function key located at the lower left on the keyboard then hit the key F1 thru F12 that toggles the display. The correct F1 thru F12 key to hit will have LCD/CRT on it or it will have the icon of a display. The display toggles in three stages ( laptop only, external only or both laptop and external).

Model acer travelmate 4000 nodisplay on lcd and external monitor

You say the trouble is with the keyboard. Can you attach an external keyboard via USB and see if you can push Fn key with F5 (I think it is the F5 key - try Fn with others - keep Fn pressed and repeatedly press the F5 or F6 etc.) several times to see if the screen toggles between LCD and external monitor. For this to work you will have to restart the computer after attaching the external keyboard. Press the start button until the computer goes off, and press again to restart.

Itf you ascertain that the trouble is with the 99.N7082.01D, make sure to try to fit it in correctly, or perhaps the Fn key has some dust or liquid in it so it does not function. Then you have to try to clean it from the inside after you disassemble.

My HP Pavillion M70 monitor is saying "video cable connected?" when I try to use the monitor. I am trying to output my laptop to the monitor because my laptop screen is wearing out, but I cannot get it to...

go into the BIOS settings and tell it to use the LCD/Monitor as a display.

or

press fn key+(F5 or F7 or F8) 1x or 2x or 3x.....

Fn key combination. The Fn key is located at the lower left of the keyboard, normally between the CTRL and the ALT key. Toshiba uses Fn-F5 to toggle between the laptop LCD and an external display. IBM or Lenovo uses FN-F7, Acer varies with the model, using Fn-F5, Fn-F3, Fn-F8, Sony Fn-F7, Dell Fn-F8, HP or Compaq, Fn-F4. There are variations with the age of the laptop and not all manufacturers have standardized on a key combo across the whole range, but you can usually figure it out from the little graphics on the function keys that line the top of the keyboard.

Try holding down the Function key (Fn), then pressing F5. Wait a few seconds. On most laptop, each press of the F5 key will toggle between laptop display only, projector only and Dual (same image on both - my favorite).

You'll probably see a little Monitor-shaped icon on the F5 key. It's possible it's another function key - on Dells it's usually F8.

Monitor problem

If it is clear with no lines when it boots and you see the Bios settings and splash screen it maybe ok... it may just be your Display Settings in your Opperating System. Use F5 to go into "Safe Mode" to reset. You toggle F5 at boot and select Safe Mode.

See if you can use an External Monitor. You may need to use the Function F4 Key or one of those to toggle the Monitor. If it works on the monitor and not you display then it could be your display screen. Fixable for 250-350 dollars typically.

If you don't get to Safe Mode sucessfully and not display on the external monitor... could be video card... and that meens motherboard replacement. Part is 200 and labor about 150-200.

Assuming you are connecting the mointor to DVI or VGA cable. You can connect the monitor through windows. In vista, right click, personalize, display settings, You should see a greyed out monitor. Click extened the desktop onto this monitor, It should automaticaly detect itself.
In xp its similar. Right click on desktop, go to properties. You should see a screen pop up. Go to the last tab. it should be monitor. Click on teh greyed out area and click Extend the display to this monitor.
