Question about Hotpoint HSS25GFP Side by Side Refrigerator

Refrigerator 52 degrees

The Hotpoint side by side refrigerator is 52 degrees. I had to defrost this last week, because even thought the evaporator was frosted up, all my frozen foods thawed, and the refrigerator side was in the 60's. Once I got all the ice removed I plugged it back in and for about a week the temps have been good. Now I see the frost forming again in the frezeer and the refrigerator is up to 52 degrees. I opened the plastic air door in between the frezzer and refrigerator but it is still not cooling down. As a precautionary measure I removed the light bulbs. and checked all the door seals. This is only a three year old unit.

I HAVE A HSS22IFMD AND I AM EXPERIENCING THE SAME PROBLEM. I HAVE ALREADY REPLACED THE DEFROST HEATERS AND THE DEFROST TIMMER THAT IS MOUNTED ON THE EVAPORATOR. IT WILL WORK FINE FOR ABOUT A MONTH, AND THEN IT ALL STARTS BACK OVER..(FREEZING UP). I TALKED TO A LOCAL SHOP, AND THEY ARE TELLING ME TO BUY A MOTHERBOARD. I READ A POST ON THIS SITE ABOUT A THERMISTOR, BUT DO NOT KNOW WHICH ONE I NEED TO PUT ON NEXT.

It sounds like you have a problem in the automatic defrost function. The most common problem on a Hotpoint/GE fridge is the defrost heater element burning out.
Remove the back wall from the inside of the freezer section and you will see the heater below the evaporator coil. You will need to check it with a volt/ohm meter to know for sure if it is bad, but that is the most likely problem.
If you will post the complete model number I will try to give more detailed advise.
Thanks/Mike

Refrigerator is not cold. Freezer works OK

Hello,
If refrigerator is not cooling properly can be due to a defrost timer, which is causing the fridge to go into defrost cycle. Usually it takes 45-60 minutes for refrigerator to come out of defrost cycle. If the timer goes bad then it will not come out of defrost cycle and can result in this kind of issues. It can also occur due to defrost thermostat, it allows current to pass through it at temperatures of 20 to 30 degrees Fahrenheit and prevents current from passing through it at 40 to 60 degrees. This is difficult to test, though, because it takes a prolonged, very-cold temperature to turn it on. The defrost thermostat is snapped onto the top portion of the evaporator. The thermostat sends temperature information to the processor. The defrost heater must be replaced when replacing the thermostat.
1. Remove the lower fan duct work from the evaporator cover. 2. Remove the 1/4-in. evaporator cover screws and remove the evaporator cover. 3. Disconnect the defrost thermostat wiring connector. 4. Remove the defrost thermostat from the evaporator.
I hope the above helps.......
Good luck.

I have a whirlpool frig for about 5 years now and as of the last week the freezer is icing up on the left side where the door opens and the refrigerator part doesn't get that cold even with the controls...

Check the following: is the defrost timer cycling. If it is is the heater working, located behind the freezer back panel, defrosts the Evaporator coil that makes cold.

Never bye a samsoung refrigerator

That model has a flaw that the defrost heater is woven into the evaporator. I think you may have a 5 year sealed system warranty and if the defrost element is defective the complete sealed system evaporator will need replaced. So I believe that a complait filed to the company regarding this flaw will get their attention and may solve the cost of repair.

The refrigerator right side temperature is only 48 degrees

Take alook at the back wall of the freezer for frost. If you see any that is a sign of ice buildup in the evaporator. Your defrost system needs attention.

Left not transfering cold enough air to right side. doesn't get colder than 50 degrees, why?

Remove back panel of freezer (where you see the frost) and melt the frost with a hair blower. The frost blocked evaporator coils are not allowing air to pass over the cold coils, so no cold air is able to get to the fresh foods section. You will most likely need to replace the defrost heater at the bottom of the evap coils to prevent this from reoccurring in two weeks time.

Freezer won't defrost

savey73,
I think I know what is wrong. First the defrost thermostat you are talking about I believe is the round metal type with possibly a pink and an orange wire coming out of it. That is not the defrost thermostat as most people know it. That is a defrost overheat termination thermostat that opens only over 140 degrees F, that is why your old good one and your new good one show closed at room temp. If you read on the outside of the metal cover you will find it has a L140 indicating the limit of 140 deg.
Now to what should be causing your problem. You should find on the evaporator coil at the top left side of the evaporator coil a part that has 2 white wires going into what looks like about a 1" long X 1/4" round plastic thing. That little white plastic thing is a THERMISTOR. If it is bad your defrost will not work. Sounds like that is the only thing you have not replaced. There is no polarization of the wires That should FixYa
