I am being offered a brand new Thermadore wall oven (Model SEMW302BS) from a model home and I'd just like an honest opinion on the reliability of Thermadore in general. I believe this model is discontinued and I'd like to know if it was for cosmetic reasons (models requiring updating) or reliability/design reasons. Taking on this new oven will require a major re-do in my kitchen and I just want to know if it will be worth it. I checked Consumer Reports and they rate Thermadore the highest in wall oven performance but it also shows it to be the highest in repairs. (gulp) Any insight from an expert would be very, very appreciated.

Thanks Textoner.
Your advise is quite practical. I have also done additional consumer research since I posted my inquirery and in the latest research by Consumer Reports publications and their on-line site ratings, they rated the Thermadore as "tops" in performance of major brand wall ovens. However.......they also noted that they have the highest rate of repairs......4 times higher than middle brands like Kenmore or GE. One other problem with Thermadore, and other high end specialty appliances in general, is that when they discontinue a line it can become quite difficult to find service parts later. They don't carry as many models in general and they have less of a tendency to carry over parts from a discontinued line into their new or replacment designs. One last detail I discovered by accident. I went searching for a blog about customer satisfaction with Thermadore and stumbled across one with a lot, and I do mean a lot, of unhappy customers. It was not so much that their ranges or ovens had problems, most agreed that can happen with any product regardless of price, but rather with Thermadore as a company itself. The customer relations and service department, located in Huntington Beach, California, was not as attentive in their pursuit of customer satisfaction as one would expect after spending upwards of $5000 for a range. Many of these customers went several weeks waiting for parts on newly purchased ranges and meanwhile were left unable to use part or all of their purchase. When you have a range or oven that can't operate it's very difficult to bypass this inconveinance unlike a dishwasher. A large part of the blame on this poor service record rests with the German parent company, Seimans. In either case, waht really sets a great company apart from a not so great company is not just the product but the after sale and after warrenty service. It would appear that Thermadore falls drastically short on this critcal point.
We spent a large sum of money (relatively speaking) for twin Thermadore ovens around 1999 and they did fine for about 5 years. Then the fun began! We started having temperature control problems which have continued toe this day despite numerous "repairs" by a factory authorized repairman. A few weeks after the last repairs, my wife attempted to clean the top oven using the built-in system and the interior glass shattered into a thousand pieces in the process. My requests to the corporate office in California brought only incredulous surprise that I would be complaining about an eight year old oven and an offer to schedule another repair call. I asked for the telephone number for the corporate offices and saw told that that number could not be given to me. I should add that our gas cooktop ignition system also has given us problems during the last year which required several service calls and some new parts. I do not intend to purchase any more Thermadore products.
The reason for the SEM being discontinued is that the design itself went thru a update. Thermador had decided that it was wanting to change the style and features of their ovens and the best way was to redesign. This is still a very good and reliable oven. My advice is as always, do you really want the oven. If you will be happy with a lesser model, then stay with it. If this oven/microwave/warming drawer combo meets your needs better, then get it.
