- Sometimes it is the boot sector that has gone really sick and the drive can still be accessed as a slave

Have a look on the web for extension hard drives that work on the usb port

No doubt they will be a standard ide type in a box with the required usb connection coming out of the front

It may be possible to remove the drive from the USB kit install it in your laptop then put the dead drive into the usb box to see if the now live laptop will see it as a slave

There are data recovery firms but they will cost you an arm and a leg , good luck
