Question about GE JVM1790 1000 Watts Convection / Microwave Oven

1 Answer

Interior Light I have a problem with the interior light being burned out. My model number is JVM1790WK 01. It is the Microwave/Convection oven. It is mounted above the range. Can you get to the interior light without having to take down the microwave?? What are the steps? I saw a solution posted by dlarmstr for another model. Would the steps be the same? I really don't want to pay for a service call to replace a light bulb. Please help.

Had the same problem. I was told it was complicated so had a repair person come to replace the bulb once. It's already out again and I'd like to do it myself.

  • SCGirl40 Jul 17, 2008

My light is out and I looked in the instruction book but this provided me no information. I would love to know how this is replaced as I really miss the light. Mine is a GE profile micro/conv. oven.

The interior oven light can be accessed in the following way:
1.Open door and remove the top grill via the 2 screws along the top edge.
2. In the interior light will be under metal plate with fasten by single screw. The halogen bulb is rated at 120V 20watt. Looks like a G-8 bulb with 8mm pin spacing with o.a.l. 1-5/8" long

If you need the electrical schematic, you can probably find it behind the control panel. Remove the front grill, remove the plastic grill above the control panel and lift and pull out the control panel. An envelope with the schematic will be glued to the interior wall of the oven.

SOURCE: Interior Light

It turns out that this is a very simple fix (JVM1790) that will cost a trip to walmart and 7 dollars (package of two 25W halogen light bulbs.) No you do not have to remove the microwave. This unit was smartly designed.

1. Unplug the unit, Unplug the unit, Unplug the unit, Did I mention, unplug the unit.
2. Locate vent on the face of microwave over the door.
3. Remove vent held on my 3 machine Phillips screws 2 on top one on left side. The top and sides should protrude out enough to be accessible.
4. Carefully remove vent plate (may take some moving around).
5. You will notice a phillip screw facing you holding on a base plate that is perpendicular to the screw. Remove this screw without losing it to the inside of the microwave.
6. Lift base plate and housing up and out, it is tethered by a 6 inch cord that will unplug carefully fish out and you will see the plug. I recommend that you unplug the housing so you have room to replace the bulb.
7. Go to Walmart, Home Depot or Lowes and buy a 25 to 40W 8 base halogen lamp. Lon-gated or short is irrelevant.
8. Do not handle the bulb with your hands as the oil from your skin will cause the bulb to prematurely burn out. We do like a premature burn outs, we would like our bulbs to last as long as possible. :).
9. Attach cord replace housing and plug and you are ready to heat up the old pizza for breakfast.

Good Luck.

Dimmed light might be caused by a slight contact between the panel's connector and the mainboard. Or, there is a dimmer option (feature) in the menu. Depends on model. Some of Panasonic microwave ovens are equipped with such a feature.

Ge jvm1790wk convection/microwave oven exterior light bulb burned out...I can't read volts and watts on the original bulb and don't find the information in the manual, what do I buy to replace it?

The cooktop light is 120V, 40W max., part number WB08X10051.

That's all covered on page 27 of your owner's manual here.

You can find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number from the tag on the oven or part numbers here.

To replace the inside light, you'd need to remove the oven from the wall, and take off the outer cover.

Model JVM1790SK 01 Where/how do you change the

This is a pretty bad design, sometimes you can just remove the upper grill and access the light assy. If the panel is to tight to work in to change the light, you get to take the whole micowave down and remove the outer wrapper to change the light bulb. This is also not a standard bulb (part #WB25X10019). You may be able to get one from Lowes or Home Depot actually Sears would be a better bet, otherwise you will need to order one from an appliance parts outlet. Hope this helps and sorry I didn't design the thing I just fix them.

Remove the screws from around the rear of the oven and slide the cabnet off to the rear. You should be able to access the bulb from here.
WARNING: any time you work on a microwave you have to be careful of the capacitor. Unpluge the microwave and discharge the capacitor with a large screwdriver with a plastic handle.
Be careful.

Burned out light bulb

can u open the housing?. you can look at the spot where the light is and you can see a bulb holder screwed on the metal housing. it has two wires hooked up to that holder. remove those wires and unscrew the holder of the bulb. look closely at the bulb if it is fiited to the holder like an ordinary light bulb. if its like that then you can unscrew it and replace it. if its not screwed to the holder then you have to buy the whole bulb assembly at the dealer of your microwave. it is considered a special bulb only from the dealer you can get. i hope i was able to solve your problem..

Replacing interior light bulb

It may be an assembly with the bulb permanently fixed to the socket, requiring the replacement of both together.

Otherwise, in some cases manufacturers use glue or tape to keep the bulb from loosening.
