Question about Washing Machines

1 Answer

Kenmore (Whirlpool) washer 110.20912 991 made banging noise at end of spin cycle. Now it wont spin at all.

Having trouble with my waher. A couple weeks ago it started making a horrible thumping noise at the end of the spin cycle. I am the type of person that should not own nice of course I kept using it. It seemed to work fine. It just mate a terrible racket at the very end of the spin cycles. Yesterday I was doing a load of laundry and I could smell what I thought was burning rubber...When the load finished I opened the washer and the clothes were soaked. The spin does not work at all now.
Any Idea what might be wrong with it?

I am having the same problem. The only thing is that the smell that I am getting is more like burning oil.

Tech17 suggested that I replace the drive block. I did it and it worked like a charm...

You must take the cover off of the washer. pull off the upper and lower agitator. Then you will see a large spanner nut. You need a spanner wrench to get it off. remove the inner tub and slide off the block and replace it.

I have the same problem with my washer Model #110.23024100. The only difference is that mine is still spinning. Before reading about your problem, I assumed it was the brake and drive tube assembly. I can buy it locally for $103 plus tax so I want to be sure that I am replacing the right part. I have already checked the footers for level to see if this was the problem. I don't think it is a balance problem because when I peek inside while it is spinning, I can see it spinning smoothly. Also, the noise only comes when the lid is opened or other times when it is spinning to a stop. No noise while spinning except when slowing to a stop.

i found the exact problem on you tube shows a kenmore washer running and at the end of spin cycle the adgitator stops and the basket still is running and causing the noise, when he basket stops the sound stops. this is exactly what my washer has just started soing. im going to start and research the part(block, basket drive/ is this the part that is we are talking about.

Loud banging noise during rinse

Most noises from a washing machine occur during the rinse or spin cycle. If you hear loud thumping during the spin, the load of clothes may have become unbalanced. Stop the washer and redistribute the clothes, then re-start it. Repeat these steps if necessary. This will solve your problem.

Kenmore 70series top loader: end of spin cycle the

This assumes that you have a basic Kenmore / Whirlpool top load, direct drive, neutral drain (it doesn't spin until the pump removes most of the water) machine.

First, see the Sears parts site for your washer:

Enter your model number and you'll see a list of major sub-components with diagrams and parts.

A couple of possibilities.

1. The Brake Cam Driver in the brake assembly (a plastic piece could be broken.

2. The break springs may also be broken.

Following is the Whirlpool / Kenmore installation and maintenance guide for direct drive washers. It has a section on how to access and replace the brake and drive tube.

You'll have to remove the agitators and the drive block. There is a spanner wrench to remove the drive block nut but I've found that a short 10: pipe wrench hooked over one of the nubs on the nut and sharply taped with a hammer will loosen it.

Please see GURU JSROCK516 Description of how to remove cabinet and access the transmission.

Washing machine

This sounds like the brakes have gotten some residue on them and are grabbing way too hard. The banging is the tub stopping too fast and the torque from this makes the tub bang into the cabinet. Just one bang at the end of a spin. Is this correct???
