Creative ZEN running on UBUNTU

I have UBUNTU and I want to use a software program that works on UBUNTU.

I am using Ubuntu 7.10 - the Gutsy Gibbon - released in October 2007.

I have installed kZenExplorer and Gnomad2. I have tried kZenExplorer and got it to connect and see the default songs that came on the unit, but when I try and Sync, it freezes up. I haven't tried Gnomad2 yet, I will and the I'll let you know. Thanks for any help.

I have a Creative Zen Sleek Photo Mp3 player. I am running Kubuntu 7.10. When I plug the player into the usb port it is not recognized. It dosent appear any where that I can find.

I've posted the walkthrough... it's remarkably easy and straightforward, but just in case anybody wants it, it's there.

Re: Creative ZEN running on UBUNTU

Creative Zen uses MTP which is a Microsoft jobby. Gnomad will allow you to transfer files between Ubuntu and your Zen, and you should be able to find Gnomad under the Add/Remove option in Applications.

I'll make a full walkthrough and add it to my blog later today.

I have a 5 year old Creative Zen Touch 20GBUSB2.0 TouchPad MP3 Player. The software will not operate on Vista or Windows 7. Can anyone help

If the software was released for earlier versions of Windows, then running it on newer versions can cause issues. You can try to use the Windows compability mode to fix the issue. The link below will go over the directions you need to take in order to do this.

How to run older programs

If this does not work, you may want to reach out to Creative Labs Technical support to see if they have an updated version of the software to use.

I need a program for the Zen V Plus that works with Windows Vista. I loaded a disc that was for xp and of course it does not work on my pc

Go to the Creative site for Vista software. The Zen V Plus support is available with next link:,VARSET=CategoryID:213

When downloading with the computer having Vista, the matching software will automatically show up for that Operating System. You can scroll down on the support page for changing manually the OS. When the screen does not show Vista downloads, select and SUBMIT for selecting the required Operating System (Vista 32 or 64 bit)

For software for the computer look under Application:
click 'Show Details' for more information about the software.
Media Source Player contains the utilities for main tasks.
There are also extra programs and updates when running Vista.

Creative ZEN running on UBUNTU

I've had the Zen working fine on various versions of Ubuntu - it's worth upgrading though.

I heard the KZenExplorer isn't really supported that much, I tend to use Gnomad2, it seems the option of choice.

My zen photo sleek is stuck in recovery mode

I had this same problem and almost threw out the Zen. You need to download the Zen Sleek Photo firmware upgrade software from Creative (

  1. The firmware updater needs to run in XP SP2 or SP3. It apparently won't run on Vista.
  2. The trick to getting the Zen recognized by the firmware update software is to make sure you uninstall both WMP11 as well as the WMP11 Runtime. Those two things are listed separately in Add/Remove programs. BOTH must be uninstalled before the firmware updater will recognize your Zen.
Now I'm back to using my Zen. It's all good.

Creative ZEN running on UBUNTU

I posted a walkthrough for this on my blog here.

Basically Gnomad2 is the way forward. For anyone new to Linux in general, and Ubuntu specifically, the blog talks you through it. For those that have used it before, you know the drill - Add/Remove Applications, and get Gnomad from the Open Source applications.

Can?t transfer files using the Creative Media Source Organizer. I?m getting the following error: ?Error: Unable to create file. Restart player and try again." Tried restarting the device, but no use....

Uninstall everything from your PC, reboot, reinstall driver and the Explorer (I do not use MediaSource, only the Explorer). If it didn't work out follow these steps: 1. Uninstall Creative Media Source and all related software. 2. Install the driver. In the installation CD the driver is usually in \Drivers\English 3. Turn on the Nomad an connect it to the PC. 4. Install MediaSource(the program requires that you have the nomad connected while installing) 5. Install MediaSource plugin 6. Try transferring files. If you?re still running into problem know that there are other programs capable of handling MediaSource?s functions, such as - Portable Audio Devices Power Toy , NomadSync, Real player, and there?s also a Zen plugin for the Winamp. Good luck!
