Question about Paradigm PDR 8 Subwoofer

1 Answer

No function I have had this powered subwoofer for a few years and it worked well enough for a while. At some point it developed a buzz, so I disconnected it. When I went to mess with it again, it doesn't work at all. Plugging it in only with no audio connection and switching it to ON, it just makes and aweful loud buzz. I have swapped out fuzes, and pulled the thing apart completely. There aren't any visable problems with the connections. Paradigm PDR-8 Model 15809

Klh powered subwoofer model ASW10-120B... when you plug in to power... it makes a loud buzzing/humming noise

I would check the caps on the power supply. They are rather large electrolytic capacitors that will look like they burst and/or leaking. When these die, the caps ground and the sub will make a loud buzzing sound. If you are handy with a soldering iron you can replace them yourself. Replace them with the same voltage or a little bigger and same with the size.

If the cap. says 16v 4700pF on it, for example, a 20v 5300pF or a 16v 6200mF cap. will work for this application.

Hi, I get a buzzing sound coming from my s8.3 when it's plugged into the power outlet. No other cable are connected, it's only plugged into power outlet. Any suggestions? thank you!

I also had a severe hum or buzz that was NOT a ground fault loop issue or any other such problem.

Hummed to the point that reading in the family room was annoying !

I took my amp to a Very Qualified shop and the technician simply insulated the transformer 40.00 usd

Left speaker has developed a hum. Checked connections and all seems well. Sounds raspy like the speaker has blown.

This is likely due to a problem with the amplifier. You may have turned up the amp to the point of overdriving the speaker. The distortion at these high levels cause clipping and turn what was once crisp, clear sound into a muddied, garbled mess.

If the speaker is left connected to that source long enough, damage to the speaker and the amp may occur.

Without changing positions of the speakers: You can disconnect the affect Front or Rear L & R speakers and swap them (connect the L speaker to the R output of the amp and vice-versa). If the buzzing / hum "moves" to the other speaker, then the amplifier has the problem. If the buzzing / hum stays with the same speaker, the speaker has issues and is likely "blown".

Either way, it is probably not going to be a "cheap fix"

Good luck!

Jvc sxpw650, my house was hit by lightening and now my sub makes a loud noise and the receiver which was grounded reads overload after the speakers work for a few seconds! please help? can i just replace...

The reason it goes into overload is due to the fact that the power amp section parts have developed a short and thus causing an overload in the power supply. The affected parts need replacing and I rather suspect that the subwoofer amp section has also developed a fault. I rather think with the lighting damage that you might have to replace the lot! And not just the subwoofer!! If your house was insured replacements might be covered by that. If not you sound like your in for a big bill!

Constant noise from Mirage NanoSat 5.1 System Subwoofer

sounds like an earth fault either with the plug circut or more likely with the power board of the unit.

Loud buzzing from Kef PSW1000 Subwoofer

yes. A good idea. Kill power to the sub, then unplug and remove everything from the sub. go ahead and plug it in again and check for buzzzz.
That is test one. if you have buzz still, its the sub assembly. bad luck, but not impossible. If the buzz is gone its one of the signals to the sub. They can produce a buzzz without any signal coming from your stereo equipment. Replace the feed line, enjoy! BTW...Kef sure does sound clean. good choice.

Major buzz/Humming sound coming from my subwoofer

Well there are only a few reasons i can think of that just might be the reason behind said buzzing.

1. It may be connected to another power source ( amplified or powered supply ) or incorrectly connected. It may also be too close to said power supply.Try letting the dog (sub) out on his leash a little Drag out the manual that came with the sub, and check the correct procedure for your type of setup.
**People do read manuals still don't they ?**

2.The only other problem i have heard of is port noise in low registers. Keep the the port area clean, as it may suck up dirt, or even worse, small children!

3. However, if you're considering placing this subwoofer in a cabinet, I'd recommend allowing ample breathing room for the heat sink. This can also be done by drilling smaller holes in the cabinet ( 8-12 mm holes - with the owners permission of course) but please do remember to keep the port area clean.

4. The product ie: Velodyne DPS-12 Subwoofer, came with a bad power supply, presuming it is new, check your warranty.
(not very likely - see also scenarios 1, 2 or 3.)

Velodyne has been making subs forever and do it well.
