Question about Canon PowerShot A530 Digital Camera

1 Answer

Short battery life

We have had our A530 for approximately 16 months. Very early on we were seeing the red battery light, even after only a few shots. Although we didn't take many pictures, shortly after changing the batteries (AA) we'd see the flashing red battery light. Assuming that because we didn't use the camera that much, we thought that probably the batteries had lost their charge. It did seem strange, however, that only after a few pix, the battery light went on. Finally last October we decided to change to rechargeable batteries and bought a Merkury brand charger. We continued to see the red battery light, plus at times "change batteries" even though they had just been changed. At those times the camera shut down and when pressing the on/off button again it once again started, and again the battery light. We exchanged the first battery charger for a replacement. We're still having the same problem. So now we are thinking that maybe the problem is in the camera.

What shall we do now? This is very disconcerting.

My A530 has the exact same problem, but is not one of the recalled units (those serial numbers begin with 21, 22, 23, and 24 while mine begins with 31; I also visually verified that it does not have the protruding spring). The original poster didn't describe any heat on the battery door, so I suspect that neither that problem nor mine are solved by the recall. I've contact Canon support, but since it's a holiday, I don't know when I'll hear from them.

I also have an A530 that is turning on the battery dead light when the batteries have 1.45 volts; which should be plenty of juice. Serial number on my unit starts with 262, and I don't have the protruding spring issue. Anyone have any luck with Canon support on this issue? Mine is also about 16 months old.

Some of The Canon Powershot A530 and A540 cameras are subject to an advisory recall. Seems that a small spring on the battery compartment door can short out the batteries. Suspect this of yours, in that you mention that your batteries aren't lasting long. If your camera is on the list, Canon should fix this for you for free, including free shipping both ways. This is regardless of your camera's warranty status. Please check the following link for more info:

I know you said you check, but you could be having the same problem.
ome Canon Powershot A530 and A540 cameras are subject to an advisory recall. It seems that a little hinge spring in the door of the battery compartment can stick out and short the batteries. The end result is very poor battery life, with only a few shots taken before the batteries die. Also the battery door becomes hot.

Note that some batteries just don't hack it in digital cameras, even if new. This is especially true for those "super heavy duty" batteries:

sounds like the flash isn't charging, as the flash icon flashes while the flash is charging before letting you take the photo. Put it in "P" and disable the flash and see if it'll let you take a photo. G>
