Generic problem for all Washing Machines

Maytag washing machine A490

The washer filled up with water and when it was time to start agitating the motor just hummed and gave off a burning electrical odor. This machine is 15 yrs. old and I was guessing motor or motor starter problem. Could there be anything else wrong?
I have the same problem
