It would seem you are having a pressure problem. As the burner uses more fuel, it apparently is not keeping up with the fuel needs. This would indicate a loose fitting somewhere. Start at the bottom and where the regulator attaches to the propane tank. Then move to the other side of the regulator where it attaches to the hose/tube that goes up to the burner. Lastly, check where the hose or tube attach to the burner. Spray a little soapy water around the different fittings and watch for bubbles. If you find a leak, tighten things down. Leaks are often associated with changing tanks, moving the heater around, or fittings not being tight. If the heater is a used one, be sure all the normal maintainence is done. Bugs are attracted to the soot and get in all the small areas. This affects the burner and pilot light area. Spiders make webs in the pilot light tube and in the burner as do other bugs.

With just the little info that you gave, I cant be sure, but as this is an outside heater, it may be possible that like a spider or wasp has crawled inside and did something that plugged the orifice or gas/air injector to the burners. A blow out with an air compressor may solve the problem, unless its way inside, then you may need to take it apart. Just recently I removed a wasp nest from a burner injector on a central package unit that had a larger diameter than a CD!!

My patio heater will light and run for about three to five minutes then shuts off, I can wait a few minutes and relight and it will do the same thing.

Hi, This can be caused by using butane during cold nights. Butane will start to freeze on cold nights but propane will work up to -6 . If already using propane then the most likely problem will be a worn thermocouple, these are consumable items. Found this site very useful, patio heaters problem solving.

The pilot light will not turn off after the burner is on... I think it over heats, because it will just shut off after several minutes.... any suggestions? Thank you

The pilot light must remain on, even when the main burner is on, to keep the thermocouple hot. If the thermocouple cools off, the gas flow shuts off. It sounds like something is interrupting the gas flow. If this is an LP heater, try replacing the regulator.
