What brand? What specs? SATA/PATA? a little more information please, lets not be so vague... some motherboards wont accept a combination of SATA/PATA drives or you may have to change an option in your Bios. in order to allow my compaq/hp/whatevertheywannacallthemselves to function with both SATA/PATA, I have to change an option do disallow RAID within the bios. please clarify...

If you just installed your new hard drive, it is very likely that is not formatted.
  1. Right-click on "My Computer"
  2. choose "Manage"
  3. click on the "+" sigh next to "Storage" if necessary to expand the tree.
  4. click on "Disk Management"
  5. In the lower part of the window you can see all your drives, starting with "Disk0", your C: drive.
  6. You might see another disk (probably Disk1 if you have 2 disks in total) with the description "Unallocated". (See the picture)

If there are any existing partitions on the drive, you will have to delete them before you can format the drive. If the drive is new, there won't be any and you can go right ahead and format it.
  1. Right-click on the box with the description "Unallocated and select “New Partition...” The New Partition Wizard will come up.”
  2. Confirm all default values in the partition wizard.
  3. Choose “NTFS” as file format.
  4. In the “Volume label” field enter whatever name you want, but avoid using spaces.
  5. I personally leave the “Perform a quick format” box unchecked, so I know the drive was formatted properly.
  6. The wizard will now format the drive. On large drives this may take quite a while (1TB will take a couple of hours!).
  7. Do not close the “Computer Management” window until the wizard is finished.
  8. It is done when the word under the size of the drive changes from “Formatting” to “Healthy” and the name you chose for the new drive is displayed.
  9. Now yo can go ahead and use your newly formatted drive.
If you have any more questions, just come back here and leave a comment. Also, if your drive was already formatted, come cak here and let me know more details about your problem.- I'm happy to help.
