This will require a full breakdown. Get the instruction manual from the HP site - it is a .pdf and gives you excellent step by step. Use a craft parts box from Walmart to keep the screws in order. The jack is a whopping $5 on eBay and it will take you 3 hrs or so to complete. JUST FOLLOW THE .pdf - NO cheating.
1 caveat: some of these laptops use a no longer available power jack - the ONLY way to get one is from an old mobo.

Yeah it could be. Always use the correct adapter mentioned for your laptop. Otherwise it could harm the inner wirings and the motherboard. Always go for the right adapter. If it was any motherboard problem, atleast it would've blinked. So this might be the problem of your adapter or may be of the power button.

Replacing ram in compaq evo n600c
The little screws are Torx head screws and sized by numbers. If you have access to a basic PC tool kit there is probably a couple of torx head screw drivers or torx head screw driver bits. Be sure to remove the battery and disconnect all other power sources. Ground yourself before handling memory modules.
