Question about Garmin StreetPilot c550 GPS Receiver
1) powers up.
2) States "loading maps".
3) Then unit goes off?
Is there a power problem or something more? Does this unit need a data card in place?
I had a the same problem but my ended up being a charging issue. My charger was broken and was not making contact. Went to local store and purchase a new one. After hours of looking on line beatting my head against the was and with plenty of reset and curse's. All I needed was a new charger.

Stupid question # 1 - Is it plugged in or running on battery when this occurs? # 2 - Is it charged?

Okay.... Here's what I had to do to get it fixed.
This is a software issue with the unit, btw.
Step 1. Get an SD card in a card reader attached to the computer. Get the latest firmware from Garmin... 6.00 at the time of this writing. (You can't use the web updater, since it won't work at this point).
Install the firmware to the SD card.
Step 2. Slide SD card into Garmin 550 and turn on power. You should see something that says "Loader" or "Loading" ... wait for this to finish. You may need to supply power to the unit for this to complete if your battery is down.
Step 3: You can access the file system now by plugging it into your usb port on the computer while the power is on. While you're there look for any files in the top level directory other than MP3 and Garmin directories. Remove those files. Make sure you safely remove the device from Windows.
The only files that should be in the top level directory should be the directories GARMIN and MP3.
And while I was there I completely emptied out the MP3 folder.
Step 4: I performed both resets .... the reset under the cover plate (look in the garmin manual for help with that) and the other where you hold the power button on for 30 seconds.
And then it started working. I'm not exactly sure which of the two resets was the one to make it reset completely but it is now working again.
I think it got confused by the files that were in the top level directory of the device. The only things that should be there are two directories: Garmin and MP3. I believe that it does get confused if there are any other files in that directory.
From now on I plan to just use an SD card to hold my MP3 files... and I won't write anything to the Garmin itself.
