Question about Computers & Internet

Not capable of recording

I just bought a new DVD/VCR combo. It says tuner not included, which I assume I cannot record anything with this. Why...and what is a tuner. I do not have a cable box....just basic cable.

A tuner converts broadcast (including cable) signals to composite video that the TV uses. Now that the broadcasters are going digital, equipment sans tuners like yours are on the market. You can either return the unit for the older style or you can buy a converter box for your cable. The Fed Gov is going to be offering 2 $40 vouchers per household to help you with the change over but it hasn't commenced yet.

I have just bought a 40 inch HD LCD TV, I want to purchase a combo VCR/DVD HD to be able to record channel 11(the new free to air channels HD). Big W gave the model No. RC 689 D to me but they were not...

The VCR/DVD combo that you purchased will be able to record what you wish to a VHS tape at low quality or to a DVD at a higher quality.

  1. Coax cable (round and screw on) from the antenna to VCR/DVD
  2. Coax/AV/HDMI cable (only need 1) from the VCR/DVD player to TV
  3. TV on and turned to the input matching the cable you used in step 2
  4. Turn on VCR/DVD and use the remote control included with this unit. Not the TV's
  5. Turn it to the channel 11 on the VCR/DVD
  6. Put in a VHS tape or DVD-R to record onto
  7. You will be able to hit record whenever the show comes on or used timed recording in the menu to schedule it ahead of time

I have a Magnavox ZV427MG9 DVD Recorder VCR Combo. Do I need a separate tuner? If so what kind? Thanks

Ofcourse you need an external tuner to receive any RF signals. Your Magnavox is not equipped with internal tuner with it. OK.

Need to know if I can record from dvd to vcr on a magnavox ZV420MWB vcr/dvd combo

Magnavox ZV420MWB VCR/DVD Combo
The answer is YES YOU CAN! Take advantage of one-touch recording from videotapes to DVD+/-R and RW discs or from DVDs to VHS tapes. A variety of different inputs also let you record from compatible camcorders, external TV tuners or cable boxes.

CONSUMER ALERT: This model does not have a built-in tuner for recording TV programs and will not record copy-protected tapes or discs. For more information, call the Federal Communications Commission at 1-888-225-5322 (TTY: 1-888-835-5322) or visit the Commission's digital television website at:

Connect VCR without tuner to record from television

If it has a scart, you can get a scart lead to connect it to your TV. You would need to set the VCR to the Scart socket, IE: AV1 etc.. to record. You wouldn't be able to change channel on the TV, to watch another channel while recording though. If you had a set-top box, you could connect that up to the scart of the video then record, while you watched another channel on your TV.

My jvc dvd /vcr combo will not record. I have the cable from my wall to the input in and the inout out coaxial goes into my tv. however it does not record anything

From the explanation, it looks like you are trying to record TV channel, correct? Some of these DVD VCR combos may not have built-in tuner. Do you have the instruction book? If not, you can download from website. If you find it difficult, tell me the model number.

Vcr/dvd combo recording problems

You can use a normal set top box, plugged into the AV inputs on the combo, you could even use a seperate VCR for this, as long as it's recieving the signal you want to record.
