if it doesn't boot right and makes issues ..it means that you have some corrupted files or viruses in the system from what you describe ...reinstall the operation system and format the C partition to get rid of them ...

Either one of this 3 are pretty acurate and explain very well the process ...anyway keep in mind that you need to have in handy all the drivers you will have to install after ...sound , network , and image at least ...if its a laptop you need wireless , bluetooth ...etc...

- ok ,,,for reinstalling the operating system you have to use either the recovery cd-es that you got when you bought it ...this will get it to the stage it was then ,,,or ..use Boot-able cd with xp ...or vista ...what ever you use...and the partition formatting will occur during the installation at some point ..it will ask you if you want to keep and install over or delete the partition remake it and format it ...to continue the installation ....anyway ,,I will gave you a link about how to install Xp step by step ...to get familiar with ...but let me tell you that if you never do it before ...ask a friend of so to help you cause in the moment you started there is no way back ....http://support.microsoft.com/kb/316941

Well...one thing to do is isolate if it is hardware or a software problem.
I think it sounds like a stuck key so vacuum out your keyboard is one thing. Clean your mouse as well.
But what you need to do is goto www.ubuntu.com and have someone download and burn you a ubuntu LIVE disk. Then watch when it boots and it will SAY press DEL to enter BIOS....you want to go into BIOS and switch the BOOT order so the CD-ROM boots 1st over your hard drive. Don't forget to save what changes you made in BIOS. Then put Ubuntu Disk in and boot with this. It will ask you to install or boot with LIVE Disk. Boot with LIVE disk.....if problem goes away then you can sort of eliminate that its hardware, its probably the operating system of windows. If same problem then you pretty much bet its a hardware problem.
